Selected professional highlights include:
• Coordinated multiple partnerships between the industry and the National Institutes of
Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Asthma Education and
Prevention Program (NAEPP), and U.S. Olympic Committee that resulted in the
development of national professional education programs.
• As the only physician elected to the Directors Guild of America (1986-Present), co-
produced/co-directed seven national PBS television specials on various topics in medicine
as well as produced/directed an NIH documentary on the Human Genome Project in
collaboration with Drs. James Watson and Francis Collins and the 50th
Anniversary
program of the NIMH with Dr. Steven Hyman.
• Established a non-profit organization, EthicAd.org, with Michael E. DeBakey, MD,
dedicated to establishing standards for Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) advertising. In 2001,
testified in front of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs, Foreign Commerce
and Tourism of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation regarding DTC
advertising of prescription drugs (https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CHRG-

Invented and launched Shaw Science Partners as the first comprehensive Science Agency®
, a
company specializing in developing the scientific foundation for the launch of new, innovative, and
first-in-class biopharmaceutical products. Grew company from a self-funding start-up with two
projects totaling $500K and five employees to $5M in annual revenue and 22 employees. Clients
include AbbVie, AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, and Pfizer.

ETHICAD.ORG – Atlanta, GA 2000-2008
Nonprofit group established with Michael E. DeBakey, MD, and founded based upon
contributions from its membership with the goal to institute voluntary standards for the evolving
phenomena of DTC advertising.
Executive Director
Developed a National Advisory Board of 30+ prominent clinical/scientific experts and respected
Ivy League educators charged with creating national standards for DTC advertising. Created a
strategic partnership between EthicAd and FDA and liaised with public service organizations,
FDA, and NIH at various meetings/conventions to promote acceptance of standards that were
largely adopted by Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).
Key Achievement:
• Developed and produced the official FDA website on DTC advertising, an FDA/EthicAd
partnership (www.fda.gov/drugs/resourcesforyour/consumers/prescriptiondrugadvertising/default.htm).
HEALTH SCIENCE MEDIA (HSM) – Atlanta, GA 1979-1998
Leading medical communication company and premier developer of innovative educational
media for the pharmaceutical industry with expertise in video, computer animation, interactive
multimedia, and print media.
President
Co-founded HSM with Lee Bobker, a five-time Academy Award-nominated writer, producer, and
film director. Turned $30K start-up investment into a $6M company (with 32 employees) in 1996
before transitioning HSM to new leadership during acquisition by True North Communications
(an FCB holding company) while focusing on the establishment of Shaw Science Partners.
Oversaw P&L and business operations in addition to producing and directing most programs.
Key Achievements:
• Realized 20%-30% YoY growth with profitability consistently exceeding 20% (well above
industry norm).

Advisor to medical specialty societies in the development of educational media for continuing
medical education, producer of educational media for professional education.
Medical Advisor
Served as an NIH consultant to professional organizations and medical societies to catalyze the
development of educational media in postgraduate professional education and continuing
medical education.
Key Achievements:
• Worked with the American College of Cardiology, American College of Surgeons,
American Academy of Family Physicians and other organizations to help these
organizations integrate media into CME.
• Served as an NIH representative to the American Medical Association.
• Developed expertise in interactive instructional design.

ETHICAD.ORG – Atlanta, GA 2000-2008 Nonprofit group established with Michael E. DeBakey, MD, and founded based upon contributions from its membership with the goal to institute voluntary standards for the evolving phenomena of DTC advertising. Executive Director Developed a National Advisory Board of 30+ prominent clinical/scientific experts and respected Ivy League educators charged with creating national standards for DTC advertising. Created a strategic partnership between EthicAd and FDA and liaised with public service organizations, FDA, and NIH at various meetings/conventions to promote acceptance of standards that were largely adopted by Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). HEALTH SCIENCE MEDIA (HSM) – Atlanta, GA 1979-1998 Leading medical communication company and premier developer of innovative educational media for the pharmaceutical industry with expertise in video, computer animation, interactive multimedia, and print media. President Co-founded HSM with Lee Bobker, a five-time Academy Award-nominated writer, producer, and film director. Turned $30K start-up investment into a $6M company (with 32 employees) in 1996 before transitioning HSM to new leadership during acquisition by True North Communications (an FCB holding company) while focusing on the establishment of Shaw Science Partners. Oversaw P&L and business operations in addition to producing and directing most programs. NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE/NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH – Atlanta, GA 1976-1979 Advisor to medical specialty societies in the development of educational media for continuing medical education, producer of educational media for professional education. Medical Advisor Served as an NIH consultant to professional organizations and medical societies to catalyze the development of educational media in postgraduate professional education and continuing medical education.
