Daksha performed several yagnas to obtain Shakti as his daughter in the form of Sati. Sati was brought into this world to marry Shiva. Daksha performed a yagna in which he invited all the deities except Lord Shiva and Sati. The fact that Daksha did not invite Sati did not deter Sati from attending the yagna. Sati, as an uninvited guest, was not given any respect. Furthermore, Daksha insulted Shiva. Sati was unable to bear her father's insults toward her husband, so she immolated herself. Enraged, Shiva in his Virabhadra avatar destroyed Daksha's yagna. Shiva picked up the remains of Sati's body, and performed the Tandava, the celestial dance of destruction. The Gods requested Vishnu to intervene to stop this destruction. Vishnu used the Sudarshana Chakra, which cut through Sati's corpse. Sati’s ornaments various parts of her body fell at several spots across the Indian subcontinent and formed sites called Shakti pithas.
