Possible Architecture : : the Dhow 1
The workshop intends to juxtapose indigenous techniques and materials native to Bahrain onto contemporary practice of computational design and digital fabrication. We will aim to look beyond the simple revival of traditional building methods through deliberate deconstruction and re-assemblage of structural and material elements of the Dhow in search for new forms of contemporary vernacular architecture. Participants will be in contact with renowned architects in Bahrain, will learn how to use parametric design software and will work together to create possible designs for the pavilion that will be constructed for Mawane's Third Cultural Season.

Dohaland Seminar - The Aga Khan Award for Architecture: Voices from Doha
This presentation focuses on the process of the AKAA technical review and jury process based on my recent experience as reviewer in the latest 33rd Cycle of the AKAA. It sheds light on nature of the review process starting with the project nomination, selection of reviewers, reviewers responsibilities, project study, visit, report writing, and presentation of project to the master jury committee. The Aga Khan Award’s process of projects technical review is one of the most rigorous and comprehensive review processes of architecture awards.
The Aga Khan Award for Architecture was established in 1977 by His Highness the Aga Khan. It recognizes examples of architectural excellence that encompass contemporary design, social housing, community improvement and development, restoration, re-use, and area conservation, as well as landscaping and environmental issues. Through its efforts, the Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies in which Muslims have a significant presence.
An interdisciplinary studio of 16 students from architecture, industrial design, and interior design backgrounds worked to design and construct a temporary pavilion for the 80/35 Music Festival in Des Moines, Iowa. Students researched precedents, explored digital fabrication techniques, and traveled to New Orleans to experience festival culture. They developed initial proposals with a focus on modularity, constructibility, and potential for digital interaction. Their goal was to experiment with both traditional and innovative computational methods of material practice and construction.
Ahmed Hassab is an architect, dreamer, traveler with 11 years of experience using Rhino3D. He has a background in computational design and digital fabrication research. Some of his past projects include a National Egyptian Revolutions Museum from 2012, an Architectural Syndicate project from 2011, and an airport terminal from 2010. Professionally, he has worked on commercial projects like malls using Rhino3D and Grasshopper. He also operates a digital fabrication lab at the American University in Cairo where he conducts research into additive manufacturing techniques.

Project-based learning was used to teach urban planning and design students about resilient cities under rapid urban change in Doha, Qatar. Students worked in groups on two projects: the first involved proposing strategies to preserve and enhance the historical Old Mushaireb neighborhood, and the second involved designing urban corridors to link dispersed developments downtown. The projects provided experience applying urban planning and design methods while addressing issues like historical preservation, mobility, and sustainable development. However, a challenge remains in communicating the practical value of student project work to decision-makers.
