Curriculum Analysis EBUS 300 Regan Bompais
Life Transitions 30 Sexual and Reproductive Health Optional Unit Not intended to replace the opportunity for sexual education within the family Learn and practice skills to take care of personal sexual health now and in the future Learn decision making skills, and make goals regarding sexual health and reproduction
Sexual Health is a very important topic that needs to be involved more within the school curricula It is evident students are not always receiving adequate information at home It takes a certain person to teach sexual health, as I do not think anyone should just go in and tackle this sensitive topic Parents need to be informed as to what is being discussed, and maybe then we will see more education and openness occurring in the home environment School districts need to get onboard and make sexual health a necessary and important area of study within the junior and senior high school age groups It is important to be very sensitive to the students needs and wants in this area, as well as it is extremely important to create a safe environment for all students
Games
Sex-Fu Challenge. (2008). Retrieved from http://www.sexualityandu.ca/	multimedia/games/sexfu/inde	x_e.asp
This game has a fun aspect to it, while reviewing students knowledge This game is more animated and has a similar aspect to the video games that students play, so they may relate to it easier I would use this to review with students, as it is a question based game OR it could be used at the beginning of the module to test how much students know at the beginning
The Sex Ed Game. (2006). Retrieved from http://download.cnet.com/Th	e-Sex-Ed-Game/3000-2132_4-	10576383.html?tag=mncol;lst
This game has relevant questions that are important for students to know Students can play against each other which creates competition Resembles Trivial Pursuit which is a popular game in many households I would use this game as a review, most likely at the end of the module since it reviews many different topics
News Article
Birth Control pill turns 50. (2010, May 10). CBC News. Retrieved from http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story /2010/05/07/con-pill-fifty.html
Birth control is an integral part of woman’s sexual health in present day Important to get information about the different kinds of birth control before beginning usage History of birth control is important for people to know and helps people understand where it came from, its purpose and why there may be controversy I would give this article to students to show that their is history involved and maybe have them do an assignment on the article
Videos
Grupper, J. (Director). (2005). From Conception to Birth [Motion Picture]. United States: Discovery Channel
This video is a great way for students to learn how a baby is formed in the mothers uterus and the different stages it goes through in development This could be used cross-curricular with a Biology unit Discovery channel is a great source for videos and it will show a realistic and accurate portrayal of the topic Abortion can be a “hot – topic” and students may rethink their values once they see what actually occurs during development versus what they may think happens I would show this video in grade 11 or 12 (no earlier) as I think students would take interest as well as need to know the basics of development
Saskatchewan Cancer Society. (2010, Jan.21). Are your favorite players protecting themselves? [Video File] Retrieved from http://www.youtube.com/wa	tch?v=prx2ygup-tk
I think this video is very important for young males to watch as many males do not realize the seriousness of testicular cancer Young males look up to sports players and this would be an effective way for them to see that their mentors or heroes are checking themselves, which will inspire them to do the same It is also teams that are located in Saskatchewan so it has that “close-to-home” effect which proves that this kind of disease does occur in Saskatchewan regularly I would show this to a group of male students as young as grade 9, as there are very young males who have encountered testicular cancer, and if boys learn how to do this properly, it can be a major defence mechanism and potentially life saving
Book
Hyde, M.O., Forsyth, E.H. (2006). Safe Sex 101. Minneapolis, MN: Lerner.
Many teenagers have questions but are too afraid to ask, so this book would be useful for them to go to as a place to find their answers There is information on everything from deciding if a person should have sex, the different types of contraception, sexually transmitted infections, to how your sex organs actually work It does not say you should act one way in regards to personal decisions about sex, but explores many options which a student can use for them to help decide what is right for that particular student This would be a book that I have in my classroom as a resource for students to use if they wish
Popular Magazine
Redd, N. (2010). your private body & sex questions- answered!. Seventeen. Retrieved from http://www.seventeen.com/h	ealth/tips/body-sex-questions
Seventeen is a popular magazine that many girls go to for advice in everything from fashion to dating advice Because girls are going to the magazine for advice anyways, I think it is great that the editors include topics based on sexual health There are many articles that feature a sexual health topic, as well as question and answer pages where girls can anonymously write to Nancy and she will respond Many girls have questions that they are too embarrassed to ask, so if they read this and realize someone else has the same question then they do not feel so alone, as well as they get adequate answers
I would show the girls in my class that there is useful information they can get out of this magazine, and I would maybe have a couple issues laying around in my classroom The magazine can also be accessed online, so they can access these articles when they are at home, if they do not have a membership to the magazine These magazines could be used in projects they may have to do
Television Show
MTV Networks (Producers). (2010). Teen Mom [Television Series]. New York: MTV Networks
MTV has created reality shows which are very popular among the present day teenagers Teen Mom is a reality television series based on four girls who got pregnant and are now dealing with the consequences of teenage pregnancy Each girl has a very different story, there are single moms, moms struggling to stay with the father, a couple who put up their child for adoption, etc These are actual events, and hopefully it will get students to open their eyes and see that being a teen mom is not all pretty and sugar coated Nothing is really left out in the series as you see all of the negative and positive aspects of the girl’s lives since having their babies, and it is a more realistic way for students to see firsthand how one decision can affect the rest of their lives I would use this in a classroom setting, watching episodes and critiquing what is occurring
Websites
Sexual Health Center Saskatoon. (2008). Retrieved from http://www.sexualhealthcentr	esaskatoon.ca/index2.htm
This is a good resource for students to know about as they can go onto the website and find out all different kinds of information – contraception, STIs, LGBTAeducation, etc This is a website that is based off of an actual place, the Saskatoon Sexual Health Center is located in Saskatoon, so students can actually go there to see a nurse, get contraception, get advice, free condoms, etc. I think it is good for students to know of these resources that are located in the community I would show this to students in class, and let them know that this resource is available, both online and within the community of Saskatoon
AIDS Saskatoon. (2010). Retrieved from http://www.aidssaskatoon.ca	/web/
This is a resource I would use as a teacher for my own learning and access On the website there is a bunch of information, including a list of print and other resources, different events that are going on, any type of information you need to know about HIV/AIDS can be found through this website This is also an actual place within the community of Saskatoon, and there is ample resources located at the Drop-In center You can access the people who work their, through email, telephone or dropping in. These woman are very well educated and can help you gather any information you may need Sexual Health information, LGBTAEducation and Drug Education is at the forefront of this resource! There is a woman who is employed within AIDS Saskatoon who could come into your classroom and be a guest speaker on many different topics
Planned Parenthood. (2010, Jan. 4). Spiderbytes. Retrieved from http://www.spiderbytes.ca/
Planned Parenthood based out of Toronto has created this website that would be a great resource for students to use There is all kinds of information on this website – Sex, Sexuality, Health, Relationships, Puberty, as well as a list of topics from A-Z There is some neat features with this organization, including a toll free number for young adults to call if in need, a MSN chat so a student can go on and instantly chat with someone with questions or concerns they may have This was made for the Greater Toronto area, but it has many useful resources for teenagers located anywhere within Canada and the world I would have this website as a resource for students to turn to when doing projects, as well as just there for when they are in a time of need, or need a question answered
Posters
Government of Saskatchewan. (2010). What else got wasted? - Courtney[Poster series]. Retrieved from http://tinyurl.com/2fwmbdk
This series of posters is a very well done depiction of what can occur at the parties students are attending Alcohol is a great factor when it comes to young teenagers having, most of the time when they were not ready or wanting to at all Showing the students these series of posters is a way for students to associate their own lives with this girl The posters are done in a fashion that looks like pictures that were taken throughout the night, and it is in a sequence that is very common to occur. It also shows how she is feeling throughout the night I would have this set of posters up in my classroom when we are discussing as a class how you know if you are ready to have sex. It can also be used in the drugs and alcohol unit as well
PowerPoint Slides
Alberta Health Services. (2010). Sexually Transmitted Infections [PowerPoint Slides]. Retrieved from http://www.teachingsexualhe	alth.ca/teacher/resources/po	werpointpresentations.htm
This is a PowerPoint presentation that has been created by the Alberta Health Services Teachers can use these slides as a lesson plan, these slides are already created, and are filled with factual information This slide show is intended for students in high school I would use this PowerPoint presentation (as long as my classroom was equipped with the resources) to show my students when we are discussing Sexually Transmitted Infections What teacher does not love presentations that are already created, intended to be used in the classroom, and are filled with factual information! As a teacher, you must know the information included on the slides, as many questions from students are sure to arise
Alberta Health Services. (2010). Contraception [PowerPoint Slides]. Retrieved from http://www.teachingsexualhe	alth.ca/teacher/resources/po	werpointpresentations.htm
This is a PowerPoint presentation that has been created by the Alberta Health Services It is intended for teachers to use in the sexual health units and sex education It is full of factual information, as well as links that show how contraception is used I would use this in a high school classroom when the discussion of types of contraception is our topic As a teacher, the resource is already made, but you must know the information as this is going to create questions from the students
Teachers Guide
McCall, D.S. (2009). Teaching Sexual Health Education – A primer for new teachers, a refresher for experienced teachers. Canadian Association for School Health
This teacher guide had been created by health professionals in Canada to help teach new teachers, and give experienced teachers a refresher course on what to teach and how to teach It is easy to read and can be downloaded onto any computer It is full of useful information on sexual health, ways to teach, what not to do, etc This is a great resource for all teachers to have, even just to have a glance over, or use as a go to when a teacher is struggling with a topic or concept that needs to be covered Because it has been created by health professionals, it is accurate and it is also kept up to date There is tons of information a sexual health teacher needs to know, so for a teacher who is just doing a module on sexual health this is a great resource for quick and accurate information

Editor's Notes

  1. I believe Sexual and Reproductive health should be a core unit, not an optional unit. I feel there is vital information that students need to learn, and must be taught. Students are not always getting the vital and accurate information at home, where their parents could be biased, do not know the facts, or are not comfortable explaining topics that should be included. There is getting to be a high rate of teen pregnancy and STIs are constantly on the rise as well. As a teacher teaching this unit, you need to be well educated on the topics, must be comfortable discussing these situations and can not be biased when teaching.
