Tornadoes pose a safety risk for Brazos County residents. While only a small percentage of tornadoes are as violent as those seen in Oklahoma, residents should have a weather radio or app and be aware emergency sirens were not approved in 1990. Straight-line winds and microbursts cause more local property damage than tornadoes. The 2013 hurricane season was expected to be average with 13-20 named storms, 7-11 hurricanes, and 3-6 major hurricanes, though it's impossible to predict exactly where storms will strike along the coast.
