The document discusses motivation and goal setting for college. It presents an equation that motivation (M) is determined by the value (V) placed on educational goals and the expectation (E) of achieving those goals. It provides exercises to help students identify the value of various academic and personal outcomes and experiences to increase motivation. The document also discusses developing meaningful long-term goals in different life roles using the DAPPS method of making goals directive, attainable, particular, positive, and scheduled.
In 1990, the author's mother moved them to Cedar Falls, Iowa for better job opportunities, which led the author to meet their future husband in high school. After graduating high school with a 4.0 GPA, the author pursued a business degree at the University of Northern Iowa. They held several jobs over time, gaining new skills with each opportunity, and worked at Cedar Falls Utilities for over 10 years before taking a risk on a contract manufacturing job at John Deere that ultimately did not become permanent. The author believes that taking risks has made them a stronger candidate for future opportunities.

Academically, she is completing her bachelor's degree and plans to pursue a master's in human resources management. Her overarching goals are to obtain a fulfilling career in the Department of Defense while enjoying life with her family.
This document discusses learning and teachers. It begins by discussing how readiness to learn is more important than finding the right teacher. When students are ready, learning opportunities will present themselves. It questions whether readiness is a character trait that can be induced or appears through challenges. As teachers, making students ready is a challenge. Coercion does not equal readiness. The document advocates learning from life experiences in a structured way by reflecting on relationships and changing outdated beliefs.
The document provides a personal statement and reflection from Ronee Simmons, who is pursuing a BA in Psychology in 2011. John Holland developed the Self-Directed Search (SDS) assessment based on his RIASEC theory that categorizes people and careers into six types: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. The purpose of the SDS is to match a person's interests and talents to career choices and opportunities by having them complete a questionnaire and receiving a customized report on their top categories. The author scored highest in the social, conventional, and enterprising categories, which aligned with their personality as a teacher who enjoys working with others, numbers, and new ideas. Insights gained included better understanding differences from their spouse and how to use strengths outside of teaching, such as welcoming new church members. The assessment could benefit marriage

The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms for those who already suffer from conditions like anxiety and depression.
Snape functions in the Harry Potter series similarly to the satan character in the Old Testament Book of Job. Snape constantly accuses and criticizes Harry, testing his integrity and courage, just as the satan tests Job. Through Snape's adversarial role, Harry is given opportunities to prove his abilities and virtues, and is positively influenced despite disliking Snape. Snape also accuses other characters like Draco Malfoy and Gilderoy Lockhart, the latter of whom succumbs to Snape's accusations when his false celebrity is exposed, unlike the humble celebrity that is Harry Potter.
The document discusses different protocols used in the data link layer for reliable transmission of data over noisy channels. It describes the simplest protocol with no error control, as well as stop-and-wait, go-back-N, and selective repeat ARQ protocols. Stop-and-wait protocol ensures only one frame is transmitted at a time using acknowledgments. Go-back-N allows transmitting multiple frames before waiting for ACKs but retransmits all subsequent frames if one is lost. Selective repeat ARQ allows out-of-order frame delivery to avoid unnecessary retransmissions. Sliding windows and sequence numbers are used for flow control and ensuring frames are received in the correct order.
The document discusses integrative studies and how it allows students to combine knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines. It provides examples of Renaissance figures like Da Vinci who excelled in diverse fields. The author explains their concentrations in exercise science, media/communication, and organizational leadership and how these relate to a potential career in the Navy. They argue more exploration of fields should be allowed to help students find the right major, suggesting trying each discipline for a semester or choosing after sophomore year.

The document summarizes key sources related to the impacts and effects of the Affordable Care Act across two disciplines: medicine and economics. For medicine, sources discuss how the ACA's regulations have caused physicians to leave independent practice for hospitals to avoid accountability under new organizations like ACOs. In economics, sources estimate the ACA could reduce the federal deficit by insuring 34 million more people, but that costs are hard to predict and small businesses may struggle with higher premiums. Overall, the resources present different views on the ACA's actual and projected impacts on health care and the economy.

Lesson 1-Setting Goals
Goal Setting
Michael Rendon
Texas Tech University
2. Abstract
My long-term goals include becoming a U.S. Navy officer, going back to school for an
M.B.A, and owning my own business. These goals are both extrinsic and intrinsic. I want to
protect our country and could not imagine a more exciting job then being one of the best pilots in
the world serving our country and truly earning the right to fly my flag. After I finish serving my
country, which should be about 6 years from graduation, I plan to fly corporate planes, continue
my service, or continue my education. I am fully committed, but I do have back up plans just in
case it does not work out. My overall goal in life is to become a Renaissance man who is capable
of doing anything that needs doing. As far as money goes, I want to be comfortable, somewhere
in the 65,000 to 100,000 range after leaving the Navy. My goals are obtainable because I am
hardworking, athletic, responsible, creative, and am currently logging some flight time and
finishing my undergrad, which is required to become an officer. If I am flying for the Navy, you
know I have achieved my goal. After I get out of the Navy, I should be around 27 and intend to
head down to Austin to help my siblings as they get into high school and begin looking at
college, while furthering my education. After the Navy, I should have the means to go to
graduate school as I intend to stow away most of money to pursue my own business. All of these
goals should be accomplished by the time I am 31, and it won’t be the last thing I intend to do
either, just have to focus on what needs to be done now to get there. That includes raising my
grades to a 3.0 upon graduation, logging more flight time, and showing the recruiter that I am
serious.
My short-term goals include getting my grades to a 3.0 upon graduation, obtaining a
private pilot’s license to make myself more competitive, and continuing to manage my time
effectively. These goals are of utmost importance and I have never wanted anything more in my
3. life. I am working full-time, going to school full time and logging my flight hours. These goals
are necessary in order to show the recruiter that I mean business, and I will show him that I will
stop at nothing to reach the goals that I have set out for. To become a Naval aviator is very
competitive, and I understand that but I can’t help but think why not me, I am smart, I am
disciplined, I work hard, and once I have my eyes set on something I lock in. Furthermore, I
would like to state that this goal is mainly one for me, but it has extrinsic side effects. For my
little siblings to look up and think, I can be proud of my big brother, he set out to accomplish his
goals and he did, this right here means a lot to me. I love the fact that I am their role model, and I
intend to do everything in my power to blaze a positive trail for them to follow, one to admire
and one to imitate. My plan for evaluation is to evaluate my grades with the highest standard, I
need to make A’s from here on out and that is my point of reference. As for the private pilot’s
license, it takes 40 hours to get it and I have just begun, but the plan is to get as much flight time
as funds allow and be as efficient as possible with soaking up all the knowledge the instructors
have for me. Managing time can be difficult at times but it is worth it if you know what you want
to do. That means staying on top of my course work, while maintaining enough sleep and
activities outside of work and school. This also means using my leisure time to focus on my
flight studies. That may mean that I have to say no to hanging out with friends, but at the end of
the day these next few years are going to be the ones that count the most and friends will always
be there.
My three areas of concentration are Exercise and Sport Science, Media and
Communication Strategies, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The way that I hope to market these
three disciplines with the Navy and my long-term goal is simple. Exercise and Sport Science
maintains your mental health through Exercise, activity and overall wellness. Now being with
4. the Navy will be tough, but I believe that with my background in ESS, I will be better equipped
to handle the strenuous schedule and work load that comes along with being a naval aviator. This
includes diet, exercise and an overall balance that will keep me strong and healthy. The
Media and Communication Strategies for me is a way to think for myself. This concentration
really challenges me to think critically. Take for example my Public Relations class, you have to
reflect on the way your interactions reflect on your public image, as the way you present yourself
reflects on your personality. Another example would my race, ethnicity and gender class where
we broke down how your race, ethnicity, or gender can really affect the way you are portrayed.
In this class we learned that everyone is set into categories, when you walk into a place you are
always categorizing people, and what this class challenged us to do is to categorize people based
on who they are and not what they look like. For example, we had a singer songwriter in our
class who was white and was very quiet. Just by looking at her, you know that she is a white
female, but when she went up in front of the class and spoke about her career, you learn
something that you would not have known before. Now you may ask how this tie in. Well it is
simple, when I go into the Navy I am going to treat everyone with the utmost respect,
understanding that everyone comes from different places and everyone has a story to tell. Not
putting people in categories based on their looks but taking each individual for who they are
personally and removing all biases. Now with Interdisciplinary Studies I plan to use the
professional skills taught here as well as tying everything that I learn together and really
conceptualizing everything that I am taught. Becoming a Renaissance man has always been
something I have strived for, not necessarily knowing everything, but knowing enough about
everything and building on that knowledge. I like taking things that I learn in other subjects and
tying them into one it really helps connect the ideas and build on your understanding. So with
5. Interdisciplinary Studies I can create goals, become a better problem solver, learn to work better
with a team, and really build on the foundational skills that IDS teaches you for the workplace.
