Setsubun is an annual Japanese event held on February 3rd, the day before the beginning of spring. It involves a bean throwing ceremony called mame-maki where beans are thrown while shouting phrases to ward off demons and welcome fortune for the new year. The ceremony makes use of goblin masks depicting demons like the Kurama Tengu and Karasu Tengu. According to a Japanese legend, the hero Momotaro fought real demons called Oni, and Setsubun commemorates this tale through its bean throwing traditions and goblin masks.
