1. Energy
SET-Plan Action 4:
Increase the resilience and
security of the energy system
“Smart Networks
for the Energy
Transition”
Activities of Member States
2. 1.
• Small: biogas, PV, solarthermal
• Medium: solar power plants, Wind on/off-shore,
CCGT
• Large, nuclear, CCGT
Variety of generation sources in size, both centralised and
decentralised, fully or largely circular
Transition of Energy Networks
4. IP vision and objectives
Flagship Initiative 1:
Develop an Optimised European Power Grid
enabling the appropriate level of reliability, resilience and economic efficiency, while integrating variable
renewables, such as wind and solar generation by providing increased flexibility thanks to innovative
technologies enhancing customer participation, integrating better storage, making the best use of
connections with other networks (e.g. heat&cold, transport) and optimizing the use of flexible sustainable
combined power and heat generation.
Flagship Initiative 2:
Develop Integrated Local and Regional Energy Systems
that make it possible to efficiently provide, host and utilise high shares of renewables, up to and beyond
100% in the local or regional supply by 2030, enabling regions and local communities to realise their high
sustainable energy ambitions.
Expected outcomes:
• Affordable system solutions and services enabling high shares of RES in
energy consumption
• Market ready technologies and business cases for integrated and smart
energy systems and networks
• sound knowledge base on upscaling and transferability of solutions, on
system architectures and their implications on security and resiliency, as well
as on enabling market and business models
5. IP execution
• Governance Structure with permanent dialogue between EC,
Industry (ETIP SNET), and national stakeholders established
• Joint Programming Platform established, 30 public funding
partners from 23 countries, ~100 Mio € funding spent,
5th (2019) and 6th (2020) joint call under preparation,
Koncept: Impact Network Approach, 3 Layer Research Model, 3
Pillars of Integration, Knowledge Community
• Project Monitoring and Knowledge Sharing Platform
established; First Joint Working Group with EU Projects
(BRIDGE) and ERA-Net Knowledge Community started
(„Energy Communities)
• Pilot: National Stakeholder Initiatives on Innovation Actions
• Pilot: linking national IPs
6. Joint Programming Platform Smart Energy Systems
A multilateral funding network of public funders
Public funding partners from 23
European countries and regions30
