Exploring patterns for using server-side JavaScript along side existing (non-JavaScript) application architectures. In other words, how to use *some* SSJS without rewriting your entire app in JS.
Isomorphic JavaScript applications can share the same code and run on both the front end and back end. It is also a spectrum containing applications that share minimal bits of validation logic with ones that share a bulk of the application code. Nashorn is a new JavaScript engine for Java that was released with Java 8. The Nashorn JavaScript engine makes isomorphic web apps on the JVM possible by allowing the exact same browser code to run on the server. This enables us to achieve the don’t-repeat-yourself (DRY) principle, by reducing repetition in a multitier architecture. This presentation covers the key concepts, rationale, and categories of Isomorphic JavaScript and how it makes your large applications maintainable.

Building Isomorphic Apps (JSConf.Asia 2014)Spike Brehm
Over the past year or so, we’ve seen the emergence of a new way of building JavaScript web apps that share code between the web browser and the server, using Node.js — a technique that has come to be known as "isomorphic JavaScript.” There are a variety of use cases for isomorphic JavaScript; some apps render HTML on both the server and the client, some apps share just a few small bits of application logic, while others share the entire application runtime between client and server to provide advanced offline and realtime features. Why go isomorphic? The main benefits are performance, maintainability, reusability, and SEO.
This talk shares examples of isomorphic JavaScript apps running in the wild, explore the exploding ecosystem of asset building tools, such as Browserify, Webpack, and Gulp, that allow developers to build their own isomorphic JavaScript apps with open-source libraries, demonstrate how to build an isomorphic JavaScript module from scratch, and explore how libraries like React and Flux can be used to build a single-page app that renders on the server.

It's lean, it's crazily fast and it's packed with features: Gatsby is a game changing static PWA generator. This talk shows how to use Gatsby to access arbitrary content sources with its unified GraphQL interface and build applications that even work when you’re not connected to the internet. We’re digging into fast, brainless deployments, automatically scoped CSS for your components and put a number of plugins on display that help you generate sites that are not only fast and crawlable but also fun to use.

Confoo - Javascript Server Side : How to startQuentin Adam

We all know that web performance optimization is becoming critical to the success of web sites and applications. The problem is, we often don’t have the control over the UI Architecture (“middle-end”) that we need to really make things better.
We’ll talk about how to use JavaScript (client- and server-side) to revamp the middle-end so we can throttle web performance (and code maintainability) to the next level.
Dude, That's Some Strange UI ArchitectureKyle Simpson
Exploring CVC (Clients-Views-Controllers) pattern (instead of MVC) for Middle-End UI Architecture, using server-side JavaScript for DRY code that can be used both on the server and in the browser.
We will explore a bottom-up re-visioning of UI architecture, showing how the deconstructed approach of CVC (Client-View-Controller) solves many of the problems that plague traditional frameworks in the web application space.
JavaScript Architecture: The Front and the Back of ItKyle Simpson
Explore new ways to use JavaScript on the server and in the browser to achieve scalable, secure, robust, and maintainable UI architecture for web applications.
JavaScript UI Architecture: Be all that you can beKyle Simpson
Most web applications take UI architecture for granted, simply using out-of-the-box offerings from the framework of choice without much thought. This often yields far too complicated templating, data exchange (Ajax), URL routing, validation, etc. CVC (Client-View-Controller) is an alternative, deconstructed, framework-independent approach to building/delivering performant, maintainable web UI.
Loading JavaScript: Even a caveman can do itKyle Simpson
No matter how awesome your JavaScript code is, we all face the same problem: how to squeeze it down the wire and get it loaded and running in the browser as quickly and efficiently as possible. There are about as many ways to approach this problem as there are developers trying to solve it, which makes the landscape of JavaScript Loading solutions confusing and painful to navigate. But it doesn't have to be so ugly. We're gonna break it down so you can come away feeling more confident in how best to load your JavaScript. Several common strategies will be covered, including:
- Build-time versus on-the-fly
techniques
- Code organization/compression
(minification, gzip, etc)
- File concatenation
- Inline scripts
- Dynamic parallel loading of
JavaScript resources (LABjs, etc)
- Cache optimization (initialization
profiling, on-demand loading,
pre-fetching, etc)

Like any good Javascript framework would, jQuery includes Ajax functionality into its core. In particular, though, jQuery has some interesting ways it approaches event handling with Ajax responses. We’re going to dive into this Ajax event mechanism, and see what fun we can have with extending it.
This talk will first review the various Ajax events and some common ways they are used. Then, we’ll investigate jQuery source code and see how each is accomplished. Armed with this knowledge, we’ll talk about some scenarios where you might want to extend these events with extra functionality, or even add your own custom Ajax events.
To move from the theoretical into the concrete, we will discuss two jQuery Ajax plugins I released, mpAjax and flXHRproxy, and look at how each needed in its own way to hook into the Ajax event mechanism and extend it.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
