10 years ago I presented for the first time at Visug on the topic of Visual Studio Team System, the first iteration of a product family that allowed us to automate the long road from requirement to software in production, and everything in between. At the time software development was mainly a manual process. The software itself was either monolithic or composed of large 'SOA Services' and it was a real challenge to get them into production every few months in a so called 'big bang’ deployment. Since then our profession has gone through some major changes, software development looks a lot different now. Today, many applications consist of small parts called 'microservices'. These microservices make their way into the cloud or datacenter automatically, through API driven Continuous Deployment systems, every time anyone on the team commits a small change. While deployments are now happening continuously, they do have an impact on the system: taking down part of it for maintenance all the time. But at the same time, our customers expect the overall system to stay up 24/7. In this talk I will introduce you to an upcoming technology, called Service Fabric, that can help you maintain your development agility in this new world, but still live up to your customer’s expectations.

Netflix has a complex micro-services architecture that is operated in an active-active manner from multiple geographies on top of AWS. Amazon gives us the flexibility to tap into massive amounts of resources, but how we use and manage those is a constantly evolving and ever-growing task. We have developed Titan to make cluster management, application deployments using Docker and process supervision much more robust and efficient in terms of CPU/memory utilization across all of our servers in different geographies.
Titan, a combination of Docker and Apache Mesos, is an application infrastructure gives us a highly resilient and dynamic PAAS, that is native to public clouds and runs across multiple geographies. It makes it easy for us to manage applications in our complex infrastructure and gives us the ability to make changes in the IAAS layer without impacting developer productivity or sacrificing insight into our production infrastructure.

Applying DevOps to Databricks can be a daunting task. In this talk this will be broken down into bite size chunks. Common DevOps subject areas will be covered, including CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment), IAC (Infrastructure as Code) and Build Agents.
We will explore how to apply DevOps to Databricks (in Azure), primarily using Azure DevOps tooling. As a lot of Spark/Databricks users are Python users, will will focus on the Databricks Rest API (using Python) to perform our tasks.
We will walk through the exploration, training and serving of a machine learning model by leveraging Kubeflow's main components. We will use Jupyter notebooks on the cluster to train the model and then introduce Kubeflow Pipelines to chain all the steps together, to automate the entire process.
Today, the development and operations landscape has shifted to a more collaborative model merging the two (DevOps). Developers need to know much more about the operational components of their software - especially around network programming, services development, and continuous deployment. Likewise, the developer's IT counterpart needs to know much more about development - especially around infrastructure automation (Chef/Puppet), automated testing, and continuous deployment.

Intermediate languages are used in compiler construction to simplify retargeting compilers to multiple machine architectures. In the implementation of \emph{domain-specific languages} (DSLs), compilers typically generate high-level source code, rather than low-level machine instructions. DSL compilers target a software platform, i.e. a programming language with a set of libraries, deployable on one or more operating systems. DSLs enable targeting \emph{multiple} software platforms if its abstractions are platform independent. While transformations from DSL to each targeted platform are often conceptually very similar, there is little reuse between transformations due to syntactic and API differences of the target platforms, making supporting multiple platforms expensive. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of PIL, a Platform Independent Language, an intermediate language providing a layer of abstraction between DSL and target platform code, abstracting from syntactic and API differences between platforms, thereby removing the need for platform-specific transformations. We discuss the use of PIL in an implemementation of WebDSL, a DSL for building web applications.
