Hexagonal architecture (a.k.a. ports and adapters) is a fancy name for designing your application in a way that the core domain is separated from the outside world by input and output ports. With a little bit of imagination one can visualise this as a hexagon made up of domain objects, use cases that operate on them, and input and output ports that provide an interface to the outside world. Many projects involve integration or communication with external software systems. Think of databases, 3rd party services, but also application platforms or SDKs. Such integrations and dependencies can quickly get in your way, clutter your core domain and reduce the testability of your core business logic. In this talk, I will demonstrate how a hexagonal architecture helps you to reduce dependencies on external software systems and enables you to apply standard software engineering best practices on the core domain of your application, such as testability, separation of concerns, and reusability. To minimize response time and improve scalability, these services must be invoked concurrently. However, traditional concurrency mechanisms are low-level, painful to use and error-prone. In this talk you will learn about some powerful yet easy to use abstractions for consuming web services asynchronously. We will compare the various implementations of futures that are available in Java, Scala and JavaScript. You will learn how to use reactive observables, which are asynchronous data streams, to access web services from both Java and JavaScript. We will describe how these mechanisms let you write asynchronous code in a very straightforward, declarative fashion.

Presented at the Global Integration Bootcamp 2021 As developers, we tend to focus on building and shipping our services and apps to production, but it’s quite common that we forget to think about what happens after go-live. Once we reach production, the solution becomes someone else’s problem. But, even if we could build bug-free services, distributed systems will fail. And if we don’t design and build our services with traceability and observability in mind, we won’t give the means to the operations team to troubleshoot problems when they arise. While Azure Functions provide very rich telemetry with Application Insights; in this session we will see how to implement custom tracing and some observability practices in Azure Functions adding business related metadata, leveraging the structured logging capabilities, and going beyond the out-of-the-box features. In the session, I will demo a distributed tracing approach for Azure Functions that works well in integration solutions following the Publish-Subscribe integration pattern.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots. To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
