The Playback Access team at Netflix builds and operates server-side infrastructure to enable secure streaming of Netflix content to over 81 million members across 190 countries on over 1000 device types. This includes services for device activation, authentication, authorization, digital rights management, and policy enforcement. The team faces challenges of ensuring high performance, availability, and scalability to support Netflix's massive scale of over 125 million viewing hours per day, while maintaining a 99.99% service level agreement. Developers on the team work on projects to enable new viewing experiences, improve resilience, and further decompose the architecture into microservices, among other goals.
