Binoomea: Dark Places
For thousands of years, Aboriginal population knew the Jenolan Caves as dark
places. James Whalan a European discovered the Jenolan caves in 1838.
However, according to the legend James McKeown, an ex-convict had been
using the caves as a hideout. The first dark cave –Elder cave was discovered in
1848 by Whalan brothers. Today’s most popular Luca's caves were discovered in
1866 by Nicholas Irwin and George Whiting.
The caves were brought under direct government control in 1866. Despite
government control, visitors were free to break formations and take souvenirs
from the caves in the earlier years. This damage is visible in Elder and Luca's
caves. Jeremiah Wilson was appointed as the first 'Keeper' of the 'Binda', or 'Fish
River' Caves in 1867. In 1872 with the effort of John Lucas the local MP the
illegal activities by visitors were stopped. The Lucas Cave bears his name, to
commemorate his part in the preservation of this fragile and irreplaceable
environment. The Aboriginal word 'Jenolan' (High Mountain) was adopted in
1884.
Today, Jenolan is the most popular tourist destination in the country NSW, with
over 230,000 visitors annually, enjoying the wonders of the eleven show caves.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
BY ROBERT FROST
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
