• Take a day trip to Manalmon for
some; others will stay overnight.

There are 6 categories:

program, usually to prepare for a major ascent.
What do you
think is the 2. Minor climbs or Fun climbs - light and relaxing
climbs that are done for recreation.
of our

n
c limb o mountain that has been abused or neglected; tree
planting and maintaining the trails are examples.
4. Major climbs - ascents that have a high degree of
difficulty compared to training climbs.
5. Guideship climbs - provide groups with guided
treks. done for a fee and can be considered as eithe a
major or minor climb.
6. Exploratory climbs - trailblazing climbs. create
routes or trails in mountains that have not been
climbed yet.
8. Group Formation
Some of the conventions on group formation during a
trek are the following:
The lead man (Trail Master) is always in front and is
responsible for pacing the group, while the tail man
(Sweeper) is responsible for bringing up the rear.
Line formation on narrow trails should be single file.
Overtaking should be avoided. Ask permission if you
want to advance.
The ideal distance between two climbers is
approximately two (2) meters. This gap will give
climbers some space in which to negotiate the trail
and proceed along the group’s pace.
9. Trail Signals
1.The signal for stopping is one long whistle blasts -
and to commence trekking, two short whistle blasts.
2.The lead and tail men are the only persons who can
give orders to stop or proceed.
3.The international mountaineering distress signal is
six (6) blasts to a minute. To signal aid is on the way,
give (3) blasts to a minute.
1. Always watc
h
your step.
2. Stay alert.
10. Pacing
1. Always start with a slow pace to slowly warm up your
muscles. Then gradually change your pace to the
desired pace of the group.
2. The pace of the group should be that of the slowest
member or the person who has the heaviest load.
3. Do not allow anyone to lag behind.
4. Should there be a need to stop, inform the lead or tail
man so that he or she can give the appropriate order to
stop.
5. Maintain a steady rhythm while trekking. When
negotiating steep slopes, keep the rhythm (pace) by
shortening your strides. On level ground, maintain the
rhythm by taking longer strides.
11. REMINDERS:
• Waterproof your things.
• Always listen to the instructions.
• Stay with the group always.
• Notify the Team Leader, Group Lead or
the Sweeper if you need rest.
• Leave no trace.
