SCOTLAND Scotland is a mountainous country in the north of the island of Great Britain. In 1707, Great Britain was formed when Scotland became united to England. The Scottish flag is the cross of St Andrew
The Highlands:  It is a mountainous area. Ben Nevis is the highest peak (1344m). The Lowlands:  It is an industrial area. Edinburgh is the capital. Scotland  has some 790 islands and 130 are inhabited. Scotland is divided into two distinct areas:
MUSIC: THE BAGPIPE
FOOD: HAGGIS Scottish typical food.  It is made of the heart and other organs of a sheep, cut up and boiled inside a skin made from the sheep’s stomach.
COSTUME: THE KILT The national dress of Scotland. It is a skirt usually of a  tartan pattern . Men wear it. It was first used more than 700 years ago.
THE CLAN  AND  THE TARTAN A clan is a group of families usually with the same family name: McDonald, Mackenzie, etc.  Mac or Mc means “the son of”. Every clan has got its own tartan, a special pattern for their kilts.

SPORT: THE HIGHLAND GAMES The Highland Games were originally competitions to find the fastest and strongest men.
SPORT: THE HIGHLAND GAMES Today, these games also include competitions for playing the bagpipes and dancing traditional dances.
THE LAKES Scotland is also famous for its lochs (lakes). One of them is Loch Ness. The legend says that a monster called Nessie lives there.
