From Backbone to Ember and Back(bone) Again
As a software consultant, I get to see a lot of interesting code. In this particular instance a client was in the process of transforming their web application to a rich, interactive interface with the help of another company.
The project kicked off using Backbone and things were great. Until they were not great. Pages starting getting more and more involved and blame started being thrown at the technology choice.
A move to Ember.js ensued and the app was rewritten. But architecturally bad decisions don't hide long, and soon the rewrite was preforming even worse. That's when I stepped in, with the help of another consultant, to solve the performance issues once and for all. Our solution used Backbone.js and it was fast. This is that journey.
Cross-Platform Native Mobile Development with Eclipse
Developing great apps for mobile platforms like Android, iOS or mobile web is a challenging task. Not only do you have to take into consideration the limited resources your app has at it's disposal, you also have to follow the established UI idioms - which may differ on the respective platforms.
In this session, I will demonstrate how you can build mobile apps with tools from the Eclipse ecosystem. Based on real-world examples I will present a domain-specific language we used to mobilize enterprise systems or to create the official Eclipse Summit Europe conference app (http://bit.ly/ese_app_de). What's more, I will show you how to overcome the tedium of having to manually port your application from one platform to other platform technologies such as Objective-C or Django/Python. Finally, I will show how to integrate Eclipse tooling with external tools such as Apple's Xcode and Google App Engine.

For users to search the library resources, they first need to locate the library website, find the appropriate search tool and then execute their search. To make it easier for students to search the library resources, we created a Javascript bookmarket that eliminates the step of having to go to the library website first before searching.
The bookmarket provides an important bridge between common search behaviors (especially among undergraduates), and the "deep web" content located in library-funded, proprietary databases, thus easing their transition into scholarly research. The bookmarklet can be dragged-and-dropped into any browser, after which a search can then be initiated from any webpage the user visits. When the bookmarklet is clicked, the search terms default to the title of the page, and a prompt is displayed that allows the user to change the terms.

Building Reusable SwiftUI Components
SwiftUI makes it easy to create beautiful UIs in no time, but it is just as easy to end up with a giant view that mixes view code and business logic. Fortunately, Apple gave us some tools to keep the bloat in check and write maintainable and reusable code.
In this talk, I am going to show you how to
- refactor an existing SwiftUI view to make it more maintainable,
- turn it into a reusable SwiftUI component,
- add event handling,
- make the view configurable,
- use SwiftUI's styling API to apply different designs,
- add it to the Xcode component library,
- turn it into a shareable component that can be consumed via Swift Package Manager,
- and distribute it via GitHub

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
