Sedimentary rocks form through the weathering and erosion of rocks and the deposition of sediment, which is then compacted and cemented over time. The three major types are clastic sedimentary rocks, which are composed of fragmented minerals or rocks; organic sedimentary rocks, which contain the remains of plants and animals; and chemical sedimentary rocks, which form from mineral precipitation. Sedimentary rocks have various uses including construction materials, road base, manufacturing plaster, and as a source of minerals through mining.
