What is a rock?
• A rock is a solid material that forms part of
the earth’s surface. All rocks are made up
of one or more minerals.
• Examples of rocks are lime stones, marble
and diorite
What is a mineral?
• A mineral is a natural solid formed in the
Earth’s crust.
• Examples of minerals are gold, diamond
and silver
• There are over 3000 known minerals on
Earth
Characteristics of Rocks
• All rocks are made up of one or more
minerals, but minerals are not made of
rocks.
• There are less than 20 minerals found in
rocks.
• Rocks are made up of different colours
• Rocks are not as shiny as minerals

• Minerals have one colour
• They are shiny
• Are not made of rocks
