Rocks are solid materials that make up the Earth's surface, composed of one or more minerals. Minerals are natural solids formed in the Earth's crust that are not composed of other minerals. There are over 3,000 known minerals on Earth but rocks are composed of less than 20 common minerals. Key differences are that rocks can have multiple colors while minerals have one color and minerals are shinier than rocks. Examples of rocks include limestone, marble and diorite while minerals include gold, diamond and silver.
