The Herschel Space Observatory detected emission lines from both spin isomers of water vapor in the protoplanetary disk around the young star TW Hydrae. This detection suggests the presence of a large reservoir of water ice in the outer regions of the disk, equivalent to thousands of Earth oceans. The observed ortho-to-para ratio of the water vapor is lower than that seen in solar system comets, indicating the ice formed at temperatures below 20 K and consists of a heterogeneous mixture accreted from different regions of the early solar nebula.
