2. I am not the first Vietnamese patient diagnosed with cancer, nor will I be
the last one. I’m just one of 120,000 other cancer patients diagnosed in
Vietnam every year. Like many other cancer patients, I was devastated
and clueless when I was forced to face the battle I never prepared for.
However, if cancer is the battle we cannot avoid, let’s at least put up a
good fight.
Cancer has become a common disease in Vietnam and around the world.
Although we have made many strides in improving cancer treatment,
cancer incidence in Vietnam and the rest of the world will continue to
increase. Now more than ever, we need additional efforts and new initia-
tives. Effective cancer treatment and prevent requires an enormous
amount of effort, cooperation and collaboration between multiple compa-
nies and organizations.
After more than six months of planning and the hard work of many dedi-
cated supporters, the 1st Vietnam Multidisciplinary Oncology Conference
was a great success. It stands as a new milestone for cancer care in
Vietnam. The Patient Forum, Era of Hope gave me the opportunity to look
into the eyes of each cancer patient and understand the impact this event
has made; it gave them the light of hope and the courage to fight against
the deadliest disease.
On behalf of the Vietnamese cancer patients and co-organizers of the 1st
Vietnam Multidisciplinary Oncology Conference, I want to extend a heart-
felt thank you for your commitment to making this event amazing. It was
the vision and commitment of Salt Cancer Initiative and the co-organizers
to provide mental support for cancer patients in Vietnam, to let no cancer
patients face this disease alone.
This event report is a quick recap of our wonderful journey and how
September of 2017 become the most remarkable month for cancer
patients in Vietnam.
Cancer is the second chance to live this life to the fullest. Thank you very
much for giving us a chance by supporting this conference!
Sincerely yours,
Thuy Thanh Truong
President of Salt Cancer Initiative

VISITING
ONCOLOGY
HOSPITAL
In Vietnam, the cancer on young children
occurs very high compared to other coun-
tries, the public hospitals are always too
crowded with children who are waiting for
chemotherapy and radiation. Me School, a
private international kindergarten school,
that is co-founded by a USC Family, has
decided to bring the school to the kids who
has to stay in hospitals.
Every Saturday afternoon, two Me School
teachers brought fun activities like draw-
ing, singing, and board games to Oncology
Hospital in Tan Trieu, Hanoi. On September
5th, 2017, the USC students, including Sara
Ma USC Iovine and Young 2018, Sonya Liu
USC PhD Candidate 2019, visited the hospi-
tal to understand more about the cancer
care in Vietnam.
“This trip laid the groundwork for USC to
understand Vietnam's oncology research
and cancer community. The Vietnam Multi-
disciplinary Oncology Conference marks
only the beginning of our [Cancer-CSI Initia-
tive] collaboration with Salt Cancer Initia-
tive. This trip further validated the sense of
urgency we hold in the cancer community”,

WITH CANCER PATIENTS
Location: Galaxy Cinema
Address: 116 Nguyen Du, Ben Thanh Ward, District 1, HCMC

(The Girl From Yesterday)
Director: Phan Gia Nhat Linh
Producer: Vu Quynh Ha
Actors: Miu Le & Ha Mi
USC Cinematic Arts has produced the best of the best talents for the film industry in the world, and
there is no exception in Vietnam. Many of Vietnam’s leaders in the entertainment industry are USC
Alumni working across the functions from directing, producing, to content distribution.
Linh Phan, USC Cinema 2010 (Director), Quynh Ha, USC Ray Shark 2010 (Producer), and Thai Ha - USC
Producer 2011 (screenwriter), are the most successful crew to guarantee the top box office in Viet-
nam in the past 2 years with 2 hit movie (Sweet 20 - screened at USC in 2016) and The Girl from Yes-
terday (released in July 2017).
On September 6th, this team organized the first community screening for cancer patients in Vietnam
at Galaxy Cinema, one of the biggest modern cinema chain in Vietnam. There were over 150 cancer
patients and families the joined the event, many of whom have never been in a movie theatre before.
After the screening, the crew formed a panel to meet, greet and share with the cancer community.
“The comedy has nothing cancer-related, it’s just a relaxing story about
love and family to remind people about their childhood, and ultimately, we
want them to have a good time with family. As a director whose sister
fighting with cancer for the last 10 years, I want to make feel-good movies
that giving audiences positive energy and thought. Many people have
missed opportunities in their lives, whether it’s the chance to do something
nice for themselves or just a moment to enjoy a movie with family mem-
bers. Usually, people see the directors, producers, actors come to movie
premiere on the news, but only celebrities are invited. Cancer patients are
not celebrities, but they’re just as special”, said Linh Phan.

The first largest oncology forum dedicated to
cancer patients took place in Ho Chi Minh City,
September 8th, 2017.
A panel of leading world expert oncologist from
M.D. Anderson Cancer included professors in
Surgical oncology (Dr. Merrick Ross), Radiation
Oncology (Dr. Quynh-Nhu Nguyen, Dr. Andrew Lee,
Dr. Christopher Crane), Radiology (Dr. Jeremy
Erasmus), Genomic Medicine (Dr. Liem Phan) and
Endocrinology (Dr. Mohammed Habra). The
forum was dedicated to answering patients' ques-
tions regarding their diagnosis, workup and treat-
ment. The diverse panel spent time answering a
myriad of questions submitted by the audience
filled with over 500 hundreds patients.
15. Associate Professor, Dr. Quynh-Nhu Nguyen empowers patients by
emphasizing patient education and prevention in Vietnam. "Patients
can alter lifestyle by smoking cessation and decreasing alcohol con-
sumption which have been linked to the epidemiology of lung and
esophageal cancer. It is important to allow patients better access to
available screening tools for early detection of breast, colon, prostate,
cervical and even lung cancer which give patients curative treatment
options. And finally, to educate patients about vaccines for the next
generation, our children, which can prevent cervical, head and neck, and
liver cancers."
In addition, Professor Peter Kuhn from USC Michelson Center of Con-
vergent Bioscience delivered a keynote speech at the Vietnam Oncology
Patient Forum about the patient-centric approach in cancer research
and treatments. Patient left the forum appropriately titled "Era of Hope"
armed with much hope and education regarding ways to fight cancer.

“ ““Cancer affects all of us. USC’s global
convergent science initiative in cancer
is aimed at providing the patient with
hope for the future and certainty about
their cancer care. USC’s collaboration
with Salt Cancer Initiative is a critical
piece in working directly with the
patient community in Vietnam. Inter-
net based technologies can connect
and help patients around the world,
which is at the very core of USC’s
cancer initiative in collaboration with
Vietnam’s Salt Cancer Initiative.”
PROFESSOR PETER KUHN
“ ““I believe if we can help educate
patients that there are things they
can actually do. They can alter
lifestyle by decreasing smoking
exposure and alcohol consumption
which can contribute to cancer
development. They can utilize
screening mechanisms for early
detection of cancer ( colon, prostate,
breast, cervical). And we should
increase awareness for vaccines
which can prevent certain cancer
caused by infection such as hepatitis
vaccine, and HPV .”

“The University of Southern California
is honored to be part of Thuy Truong’s
cancer forum in Vietnam,” said USC
Provost Michael Quick. “We whole-
heartedly support her efforts to share
our knowledge and research with other
oncologists and scientists. This is one
of our main priorities as a top research
university: to bring our scholarship to
other regions of the world in an effort
to to help stop this disease, and
others, on all fronts. Through our
Michelson Center for Convergent
Bioscience, we have scientists, engi-
neers, data experts, clinicians and
others collaborating to fast-track the
treatment and cure for cancer and
other diseases. We are a private
research university devoted to the
public good, here and globally.”

“This is a great opportunity for Vietnamese
colleagues, especially Vietnamese cancer
specialists, including cancer specialists
from the 108th Central Military Hospital, to
study, to share experiences, as well as to
learn from the experiences of colleagues
from the United States in the application of
technical advances in cancer diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention.”
