The assignment on understanding and communicating with families was a valuable learning experience. The author worked with the South Asian Women's Rights Organization (SAWRO) on the project and found their assistance helpful despite various challenges. The author enjoyed learning about the work of other groups, including a presentation on BOOST, an organization working to prevent child abuse through education and campaigns in Toronto. Another presentation discussed the Scarborough Women's Centre and its programs supporting women, especially those with disabilities experiencing isolation and family violence. As an early childhood educator, the author aims to support children and families through organizations like SAWRO that help newcomers with services such as computer training, English lessons, and sewing classes to gain employment.

1. Reflection
The assignment entitled “Understanding and communicating with Families” was a
great learning experience. For many of us, this assignment would be a life long
experience too. The agency called “SAWRO” (South Asian Women’s Rights
Organization) had provided with whatever assistance we needed in order to shape
up our assignment.
The assignment required me to undergo many challenges such as collecting
information, lack of adequate information, lack of time due to block week and
other commitments.
Despite all the challenges and limitations, I enjoyed many strengths as well. My
strengths were my prior introduction to the organization and my familiarity about
the nature of work SAWRO does and last but not the least our wonderful group
members, who had been cooperative and had shared their ideas throughout the
assignment to give it a final touch.
I attended the presentation of other groups of our class. From them I would like to
highlight two of them. One is the group presentation of Sunanda’s group and other
one is the group presentation of Timaz’s group.
First of all I would like to summarize the presentation of Sunanda’s group. In this
group presentation I learned about child abuse prevention and intervention a
program undertaken by an organization called “BOOST” located at 890 Yonge
Street, 11th floor, Toronto, ON. Boost is a not for profit organization helping the
community. BOOST is working mainly to eliminating children abuse and violence
from the society through educating people. The area of their services is in the city
of Toronto. One of their popular campaigns called “Go Purple for Prevention”
which takes place every year on 1st October. The idea of this campaign is to create
awareness and to educate people to prevent abuse and violence. To me BOOST is
doing a great job in their chosen areas which are the concerns of every society.

2. BOOST has other services which can be participated by ECEs such as: “I’m A
Great Little Kid!, I’m A Great Kid!, Bullying, Making A Difference and Keeping
Your Kids Safe” (BOOST pamphlet).
The other group’s presentation which I would like to summarize hereunder is
Timaz’s group. In this group presentation I learned how “Scarborough Women’s
Centre (SWC)” located at 2100 Ellesmere Road, Suite 245, Scarborough, ON
provides community services such as: Case management support and counseling,
Mentor program, Educational program, Women with disabilities, Young women
outreach program. The services which had attracted me the most is the “Women
with disabilities”. The main theme of this program is to make women with
disabilities accessible more and more. These women are having isolation and
family violence. This organization also arranges workshops to make the women
aware about the violence against them.
As a future Early Childhood Educator our main responsibilities are to support
children and their families through our work. Eversince, I came to learn the
activities and programs of SAWRO, I helped many newcomers by giving them
information about SAWRO. They later on got trained in computer literacy, ESL
and Sewing. I later came to know that many of them got employed through
SAWRO most of whom were newcomer women.
