Upgrading your employees’ laptops to 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-powered laptops could boost their productivity. We created four business scenarios to compare a four-year-old laptop running Windows 7 to Intel Core i5-5200U processor-powered Dell Latitude E5450 laptops running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Regardless of the version of Windows, the 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-powered laptops completed the group of four tasks in less than half the time.
For a worker who performs these tasks four times daily, these productivity savings could pay back the cost of the newer laptop within 4 months. With these advantages, upgrading to a laptop with a 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor can meet the needs of your employees and your budget.
Fault tolerance ease of setup comparison: NEC hardware-based FT vs. software-...Principled Technologies
For enterprise datacenter staff, time is of the essence. While using a software-based FT solution such as VMware vSphere Fault Tolerance is an effective way to eliminate downtime, the five extra steps required to configure every single VM can add up.
In our hands-on tests, setting up a server with eight fault-tolerant virtual machines took only 41 steps on the NEC Express5800/R320d-M4, vs. 60 steps when we used a VMware vSphere Fault Tolerance, a difference of 36.6 percent. With a greater number of VMs per server, this difference would increase. Hardware-based fault tolerance on the NEC Express5800/R320d-M4 also reduced the number of necessary hardware components required by half compared to the software-based based FT approach.
With dozens of servers hosting hundreds of VMs, your IT staff can benefit enormously from the hardware-based fault tolerance that the NEC Express5800/R320d-M4 delivers.

We compared the time and effort two deploy operating systems on laptops with AMD and Intel processors and with two different management approaches
Conclusion
Whether your fleet is in the thousands or the dozens, deploying and managing PCs can be a challenging job, and IT teams can’t afford the time for added complications. We performed a series of tests to determine whether deploying PCs was more complex in a mixed-CPU environment. In testing with two different approaches to deployment and devices from two different OEMs, we found no difference in effort between deploying AMD processor-powered laptops and deploying Intel processor-powered laptops. Within each approach, the work also took similar amounts of time, with the hands-on admin time required varying only slightly across laptops. We also found that with Windows Autopilot, the AMD processor-powered PCs we tested took less system time to complete deployment than their Intel processor-powered counterparts. With the identical process and almost the same hands-on time required regardless of processor, our testing shows that you can set aside your concerns about the need for two disparate deployment processes in a mixed-CPU environment. Predictable and nearly identical experiences can translate to IT teams spending less time learning new processes and more time moving your organization forward with helpful user support, strong security procedures, and new tech initiatives.

We estimated costs for an organization to purchase, deploy, manage, and secure a Dell Venue 11 Pro 2 in 1 with Intel Core processor featuring Intel vPro technology versus a sub-$1,000 laptop combined with either an iPad or Android tablet. At first blush, one might expect a laptop and a low-cost tablet to be cheaper than a 2 in 1 Intel vPro. That was not true for this comparison: The Dell Venue 11 Pro device at $1289.97 including tablet dock and keyboard case did cost more than the laptop model we used in this analysis, which was priced at $779.00. The cost advantages of the Dell Venue 11 Pro became obvious when we added in the costs of the tablet, hardware support, consumer tablet replacement costs, and costs to deploy, manage, secure, and support two devices versus one Dell Venue 11 Pro 2 in 1 Intel vPro device with business-grade security. The savings would become even more dramatic if you factored in the costs associated with additional peripheral devices and accessories, and the time employees must spend managing files and content (costs we omitted from our analysis).

Investing in GenAI: Cost‑benefit analysis of Dell on‑premises deployments vs....Principled Technologies
Conclusion
Diving into the world of GenAI has the potential to yield a great many benefits for your organization, but it first requires consideration for how best to implement those GenAI workloads. Whether your AI goals are to create a chatbot for online visitors, generate marketing materials, aid troubleshooting, or something else, implementing an AI solution requires careful planning and decision-making. A major decision is whether to host GenAI in the cloud or keep your data on premises. Traditional on-premises solutions can provide superior security and control, a substantial concern when dealing with large amounts of potentially sensitive data. But will supporting a GenAI solution on site be a drain on an organization’s IT budget?
In our research, we found that the value proposition is just the opposite: Hosting GenAI workloads on premises, either in a traditional Dell solution or using a managed Dell APEX pay-per-use solution, could significantly lower your GenAI costs over 3 years compared to hosting these workloads in the cloud. In fact, we found that a comparable AWS SageMaker solution would cost up to 3.8 times as much and an Azure ML solution would cost up to 3.6 times as much as GenAI on a Dell APEX pay-per-use solution. These results show that organizations looking to implement GenAI and reap the business benefits to come can find many advantages in an on-premises Dell solution, whether they opt to purchase and manage it themselves or choose a subscription-based Dell APEX pay-per-use solution. Choosing an on-premises Dell solution could save your organization significantly over hosting GenAI in the cloud, while giving you control over the security and privacy of your data as well as any updates and changes to the environment, and while ensuring your environment is managed consistently.

In three AI development workflows, Intel processor-powered workstations delivered strong performance, without using their GPUs, making them a good choice for this part of the AI process
Conclusion
We executed three AI development workflows on tower workstations and mobile workstations from three vendors, with each workflow utilizing only the Intel CPU cores, and found that these platforms were suitable for carrying out various AI tasks. For two of the workflows, we learned that completing the tasks on the tower workstations took roughly half as much time as on the mobile workstations. This supports the idea that the tower workstations would be appropriate for a development environment for more complex models with a greater volume of data and that the mobile workstations would be well-suited for data scientists fine-tuning simpler models. In the third workflow, we explored tower workstation performance with different precision levels and learned that using 16-bit floating point precision allowed the workstations to execute the workflow in less time and also reduced memory usage dramatically. For all three AI workflows we executed, we consider the time the workstations needed to complete the tasks to be acceptable, and believe that these workstations can be appropriate, cost-effective choices for these kinds of activities.

Enable security features with no impact to OLTP performance with Dell PowerEd...Principled Technologies
Get comparable online transaction processing (OLTP) performance with or without enabling AMD Secure Memory Encryption and AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization - Encrypted State
Conclusion
You’ve likely already implemented many security measures for your servers, which may include physical security for the data center, hardware-level security, and software-level security. With the cost of data breaches high and still growing, however, wise IT teams will consider what additional security measures they may be able to implement.
AMD SME and SEV-ES are technologies that are already available within your AMD processor-powered 16th Generation Dell PowerEdge servers—and in our testing, we saw that they can offer extra layers of security without affecting performance. We compared the online transaction processing performance of a Dell PowerEdge R7625 server, powered by AMD EPYC 9274F processors, with and without these two security features enabled. We found that enabling AMD Secure Memory Encryption and Secure Encrypted Virtualization-Encrypted State did not impact performance at all.
If your team is assessing areas where you might be able to enhance security—without paying a large performance cost—consider enabling AME SME and AMD SEV-ES in your Dell PowerEdge servers.

In high-temperature test scenarios, a Dell PowerEdge HS5620 server continued running an intensive workload without component warnings or failures, while a Supermicro SYS‑621C-TN12R server failed
Conclusion: Remain resilient in high temperatures with the Dell PowerEdge HS5620 to help increase efficiency
Increasing your data center’s temperature can help your organization make strides in energy efficiency and cooling cost savings. With servers that can hold up to these higher everyday temperatures—as well as high temperatures due to unforeseen circumstances—your business can continue to deliver the performance your apps and clients require.
When we ran an intensive floating-point workload on a Dell PowerEdge HS5620 and a Supermicro SYS-621CTN12R in three scenario types simulating typical operations at 25°C, a fan failure, and an HVAC malfunction, the Dell server experienced no component warnings or failures. In contrast, the Supermicro server experienced warnings in all three scenario types and experienced component failures in the latter two tests, rendering the system unusable. When we inspected and analyzed each system, we found that the Dell PowerEdge HS5620 server’s motherboard layout, fans, and chassis offered cooling design advantages.
For businesses aiming to meet sustainability goals by running hotter data centers, as well as those concerned with server cooling design, the Dell PowerEdge HS5620 is a strong contender to take on higher temperatures during day-to-day operations and unexpected malfunctions.

Three AMD EPYC processor-based two-processor solutions outshined comparable Intel Xeon Scalable processor-based solutions by handling more Redis workload transactions and requests while consuming less power
Conclusion
Performance and energy efficiency are significant factors in processor selection for servers running data-intensive workloads, such as Redis. We compared the Redis performance and energy consumption of a server cluster in three AMD EPYC two-processor configurations against that of a server cluster in two Intel Xeon Scalable two-processor configurations. In each of our three test scenarios, the server cluster backed by AMD EPYC processors outperformed the server cluster backed by Intel Xeon Scalable processors. In addition, one of the AMD EPYC processor-based clusters consumed 20 percent less power than its Intel Xeon Scalable processor-based counterpart. Combining these measurements gave us power efficiency metrics that demonstrate how valuable AMD EPYC processor-based servers could be—you could see better performance per watt with these AMD EPYC processor-based server clusters and potentially get more from your Redis or other data intensive applications and workloads while reducing data center power costs.
Improve performance and gain room to grow by easily migrating to a modern Ope...Principled Technologies
We deployed this modern environment, then migrated database VMs from legacy servers and saw performance improvements that support consolidation
Conclusion
If your organization’s transactional databases are running on gear that is several years old, you have much to gain by upgrading to modern servers with new processors and networking components and an OpenShift environment. In our testing, a modern OpenShift environment with a cluster of three Dell PowerEdge R7615 servers with 4th Generation AMD EPYC processors and high-speed 100Gb Broadcom NICs outperformed a legacy environment with MySQL VMs running on a cluster of three Dell PowerEdge R7515 servers with 3rd Generation AMD EPYC processors and 25Gb Broadcom NICs. We also easily migrated a VM from the legacy environment to the modern environment, with only a few steps required to set up and less than ten minutes of hands-on time. The performance advantage of the modern servers would allow a company to reduce the number of servers necessary to perform a given amount of database work, thus lowering operational expenditures such as power and cooling and IT staff time for maintenance. The high-speed 100Gb Broadcom NICs in this solution also give companies better network performance and networking capacity to grow as they embrace emerging technologies such as AI that put great demands on networks.

Compared to a cluster of PowerEdge R750 servers running VMware Cloud Foundation 4.5
Conclusion
If your company is struggling with underperforming infrastructure, upgrading to 16th Generation Dell PowerEdge servers running VCF 5.1 could be just what you need to handle more database throughput and reduce vSAN latencies. We found that a Dell PowerEdge R760 server cluster running VCF 5.1 processed over 78 percent more TPM and 79 percent more NOPM than a Dell PowerEdge R750 server cluster running VCF 4.5. It’s also worth noting that the PowerEdge R750 cluster bottlenecked on vSAN storage, with max write latency at 8.9ms. For reference, the PowerEdge R760 cluster clocked in at 3.8ms max write latency. This higher latency is due in part to the single disk group per host on the moderately configured PowerEdge R750 cluster, while the better-configured PowerEdge R760 cluster supported four disk groups per host. As an additional benefit to IT admins, we also found that the embedded VMware Aria Operation adapter provided useful infrastructure insights.
Based on our research using publicly available materials, it appears that Dell supports nine of the ten PC security features we investigated, HP supports six of them, and Lenovo supports three features.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Commissioned by Dell Inc.
SAVE TIME AND ACHIEVE PAYBACK QUICKLY WITH 5th GENERATION
INTEL CORE i5 PROCESSORS
Saving time for your users can mean saving money for your business. At
Principled Technologies, we created four productivity-based workflows to see how
quickly two new Dell Latitude E5450 laptops powered by 5th generation Intel Core i5-
5200U processors, one running Windows 7 and the other running Windows 8.1,
performed each workflow. We also performed these workflows on a four-year-old
laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-2430M processor running Windows 7 and then
compared its performance to the new laptops. To see whether Windows 10 changed the
performance of the two laptops powered by 5th generation Intel Core i5 processors, we
upgraded them and re-ran the workflows. In all three operating system configurations,
the new laptops required less than half the time to complete productivity tasks than the
four-year-old laptop did.
Faster performance is always a plus, but how quickly would your business’
bottom line benefit from upgrading to new laptops powered by 5th generation Intel
Core i5-5200U processors? We used the individual time savings to project how long it
would take a business to achieve payback for a single 5th generation Intel Core i5
processor-powered laptop.1
A company that upgraded to the newer laptop running any
of the three Windows versions would achieve payback in less than 4 months.2
1
The tested configuration of the Intel Core i5-5200U processor-based Dell Latitude E5450 had a list price of $1,370.86 USD.

CAN 5th GENERATION INTEL CORE I5 PROCESSORS SPEED THINGS UP
ENOUGH TO PAY BACK THEIR COST QUICKLY?
With each laptop refresh, your business faces decisions about whether or not to
upgrade. Though upgrading does have an up-front cost, upgraded laptops can help your
employees realize important productivity savings, which can then translate to financial
savings for your business.
We developed a series of tests that measured application responsiveness and
grouped them into the following four scenarios:
Editing a set of files
Opening/using several apps at one time
Closing apps and moving on to other tasks
Hosting a conference call
These scenarios tested typical tasks in a variety of applications, including
common productivity programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel and graphic-intensive
applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, and other tools in Adobe
Creative Cloud 2015. We designed these scenarios to be as consistent as possible on
devices that run different versions of Windows.
We then used these scenarios to learn whether upgrading to a 5th gen Intel
Core i5 processor-powered laptop could save time for workers. We initially ran the
scenarios with three laptops in out-of-the-box configurations:
A four-year-old Dell Latitude E5420 powered by an Intel Core i5-2430M
processor (from the 2nd generation of the Intel Core i5 processor
family) running Windows 7
A Dell Latitude E5450 powered by an Intel Core i5-5200U processor
(from the 5th generation of the Intel Core i5 processor family) running
Windows 7
A Dell Latitude E5450 powered by an Intel Core i5-5200U processor
(from the 5th generation of the Intel Core i5 processor family) running
Windows 8.1
We executed all of the tasks for each scenario three times on each laptop and
Windows configuration. We summed the median runs for each task to get the total
scenario time. Then, we updated to Windows 10 on both laptops powered by Intel Core
i5-5200U processors and repeated the scenarios. Our testing revealed little difference
between the two laptops after upgrading to Windows 10.
For more information on the test systems, see Appendix A. For details on our
testing, see Appendix B, and for detailed results, see Appendix C.

OUR FINDINGS IN SUMMARY: A RESOUNDING YES
We found that regardless of the version of Windows it ran, the Intel Core i5
processor-powered laptop was faster for all tasks than the four-year-old laptop running
Windows 7. Completing all four scenarios took 13 minutes and 25 seconds on the four-
year-old laptop whereas it took less than 7 minutes on the new laptop, regardless of
operating system (see Figure 1). That’s a savings of up to 85.0 percent, which translates
to time that employees can gain to work on other things.
Figure 1: The time in minutes: seconds that each of the laptops needed to complete our
four test scenarios.
If an employee performed this set of four scenarios four times daily, the time
saved would add up to slightly more than two hours per week. Based on an hourly
compensation rate of $38.46 per hour for salary and benefits, we value the time each
user gets back at $82.90 to $85.04 depending on the version of Windows. Based on
those calculations, a business could expect to see payback for the $1,370.96 investment
in the Intel Core i5-5200U processor-powered Dell Latitude 14 E5450 in 3.8 months with
Windows 7 or Windows 10 or 3.8 months with Windows 8.1 (see Figure 2).

OUR FINDINGS IN DETAIL: TEST SCENARIOS
Editing a set of files
Lana takes a sip of coffee and launches Microsoft® Outlook® 2013. She has
received an email from a client requesting some changes to marketing collateral that
she helped produce. She opens the relevant Word files, a PowerPoint® presentation,
and an Excel® spreadsheet. After making the changes, she opens Adobe® Photoshop®
and edits a batch of photos to correspond to the changes she made on the other files.
Finally, she exports the photos as JPGs and created a ZIP archive containing all the
edited documents to send back to the client.
As Figure 3 shows, completing this scenario with either the Windows 7 or
Windows 8.1 laptop powered by Intel Core i5-5200U processors saved time compared
to the four-year-old laptop—66.0 and 65.9 percent respectively.
When we upgraded both laptops powered by 5th generation Intel Core i5
processors to Windows 10, they still saved time compared to the four-year-old laptop—
up to 62.5 percent.
Figure 3: Completing this scenario with the 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-powered laptops required up to 66.0
percent less time than doing so using the four-year-old system. Lower numbers are better.
Editing a number of files, including a set of photos, can slow down a system.
Lana could save over a minute using any of the 5th gen Intel Core i5 processor-powered
laptops. Being able to open applications and edit files more quickly gives Lana more
time to devote to other tasks.

Opening/using several apps at one time
As head of marketing for a software development company, Bridget has to
make many quick decisions regarding an upcoming campaign. She launches three Adobe
CC 2015 products: Lightroom®, Illustrator®, and Premiere Pro. Then she opens a Word
file of meeting notes and a PowerPoint of recent social media data for her company.
Switching back and forth quickly between apps, she reviews all the necessary
documents. Finally, she chooses a video she thinks would work for the campaign and
exports it in YouTube quality from Premiere Pro.
As Figure 4 shows, completing this scenario with either the Windows 7 or
Windows 8.1 laptop powered by Intel Core i5-5200U processors saved time compared
to the four-year-old laptop—43.0 and 41.5 percent respectively.
When we upgraded both laptops powered by 5th generation Intel Core i5
processors to Windows 10, they still saved time compared to the four-year-old laptop—
up to 40.6 percent.
Figure 4: Completing this scenario with the 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-powered laptops required up to 43.0
percent less time than the four-year-old system did. Lower numbers are better.
You might be surprised how speedy a computer can be when it’s running only
one program. In the real world, though, many users have several programs open at any
given point in the workday. It’s important that Bridget’s laptop can run programs
simultaneously, with as little waiting as possible. She could save over 3 minutes using
any of the Intel Core i5-5200U processor-powered laptops.

Closing apps and moving on to other tasks
Nick is about to leave the office and work remotely to resolve a user’s help desk
ticket. Before shutting down his laptop, he opens Control Panel and then Windows
Explorer to make sure he has saved some important manuals locally so he can view
them later. Then, he closes three Adobe CC 2015 apps—Lightroom, Illustrator, and
Premiere Pro—that he has used to review pending internal “how-to” documents
regarding IT problems.
As Figure 5 shows, completing this scenario with either the Windows 7 or
Windows 8.1 laptop powered by Intel Core i5-5200U processors saved time compared
to the four-year-old laptop—77.6 and 75.6 percent respectively.
When we upgraded both laptops powered by 5th generation Intel Core i5
processors to Windows 10, they still saved time compared to the four-year-old laptop—
up to 74.9 percent.
Figure 5: Completing this scenario with the 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-powered laptops required up to 77.6
percent less time than the four-year-old system did. Lower numbers are better.
Every second matters when your workday is ending. Nick would value each of
the nearly 20 seconds he could save using any of the laptops powered by Intel Core i5-
5200U processors. Closing apps faster puts Nick that much closer to going home for
dinner.

Hosting a conference call
Christina schedules a Skype meeting with the Tokyo office of her firm to discuss
quarterly expenditures. Before the meeting begins, she powers on her laptop and
launches Skype. While sharing a screen with the Tokyo office, she opens a folder and a
Word file of relevant data so her colleagues in Tokyo can see it. At the end of the
meeting, she sends the file to all the meeting attendees so they can have a copy. Finally,
she shuts down her laptop after the meeting adjourns.
As Figure 6 shows, completing this scenario with either the Windows 7 or
Windows 8.1 laptop powered by Intel Core i5-5200U processors saved time compared
to the four-year-old laptop—50.3 and 61.4 percent respectively.
When we upgraded both laptops powered by 5th generation Intel Core i5
processors to Windows 10, they still saved time compared to the four-year-old laptop—
up to 59.8 percent.
Figure 6: Completing this scenario with the 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-powered laptops required up to 61.4
percent less time than the four-year-old system did. Lower numbers are better.
For a business with employees all over the world, it’s important that Skype
meetings run as smoothly as possible. Time spent waiting for your screen to share is
time wasted. Christina could save nearly 30 seconds using any of the laptops powered
by Intel Core i5-5200U processors. Being able to open docs faster while using a
compute-heavy app like Skype means Christina can worry less about awkward
downtime during the meeting.

UNDERSTANDING VARIATION
Your employees probably won’t execute the identical series of tasks that we
tested. However, most workloads do include the types of tasks we tested, including
opening and closing various applications, opening and closing files, running
simultaneous applications, and booting and shutting down the laptop.
Amount of time spent on tasks
For our scenarios, achieving payback depends on how much time the user
spends performing these tasks on the four-year-old laptop. Payback would occur once
the savings reached 35.6 hours. We calculate this by dividing the $1,370.96 cost of the
5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-powered Dell Latitude E5450 by the average
user’s hourly compensation (salary + benefits) of $38.46.
We base our saving in Figure 2 on the assumption that a user is performing this
set of tasks four times daily. For users who perform tasks like these more frequently, a
company would yield an even faster return on the cost of replacing the four-year-old
laptop with the 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-powered laptop.
Balance of tasks
The balance of tasks that users perform could also affect how quickly your
business achieves payback. For example, users who spend more time on the tasks in the
“Performing general functions” scenario could see greater performance gains than users
who spend more time doing the tasks in the “Multitasking” scenario. If two users both
spent one hour performing these types of tasks on the older laptops, but the mix of the
tasks differed, the amount of time that upgrading to the 5th generation Intel Core i5
processor-powered Dell Latitude E5450 would save them would also differ.
Consequently, the businesses would achieve payback for the new laptops at different
rates.
SMALLER AND LIGHTER
In addition to offering considerable performance benefits, the 5th generation
Intel Core i5 processor-powered Dell Latitude E5450 has another advantage. Weighing
in at only 4.12 pounds, it is 18 percent lighter than the Intel Core i5-2430M processor-
powered Dell Latitude E5420. It is also 39 percent smaller—121.4 cubic inches vs. 200.8
cubic inches for the Dell Latitude E5420. Whether your employees are toting their
laptops to the coffee shop or just down the hall to a meeting, they will appreciate the
convenience that comes with the more streamlined Dell Latitude E5450.

CONCLUSION
Upgrading your employees’ laptops to 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-
powered laptops could boost their productivity. We created four business scenarios to
compare a four-year-old laptop running Windows 7 to Intel Core i5-5200U processor-
powered Dell Latitude E5450 laptops running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows
10. Regardless of the version of Windows, the 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor-
powered laptops completed the group of four tasks in less than half the time.
For a worker who performs these tasks four times daily, these productivity
savings could pay back the cost of the newer laptop within 4 months. With these
advantages, upgrading to a laptop with a 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor can
meet the needs of your employees and your budget.

with and expertise in all aspects of technology testing and analysis, from
researching new technologies, to developing new methodologies, to
testing with existing and new tools.
When the assessment is complete, we know how to present the results to
a broad range of target audiences. We provide our clients with the
materials they need, from market-focused data to use in their own
collateral to custom sales aids, such as test reports, performance
assessments, and white papers. Every document reflects the results of
our trusted independent analysis.
We provide customized services that focus on our clients’ individual
requirements. Whether the technology involves hardware, software,
websites, or services, we offer the experience, expertise, and tools to

Our founders, Mark L. Van Name and Bill Catchings, have worked
together in technology assessment for over 20 years. As journalists, they
published over a thousand articles on a wide array of technology subjects.
They created and led the Ziff-Davis Benchmark Operation, which
developed such industry-standard benchmarks as Ziff Davis Media’s
Winstone and WebBench. They founded and led eTesting Labs, and after
the acquisition of that company by Lionbridge Technologies were the
head and CTO of VeriTest.
