Foreign Investment in Saudi Arabia WhitepaperAlexis Aboagye
Saudi Arabia has had increasing interest for businesses since
the oil expansion of the 70s and 80s but as the world moves
away from oil power to renewable energy the Kingdom has
also looked to move with the changes. Not only with the
expansion into more sustainable power but also to expand its
Sovereign wealth fund and private sector businesses to rival
other major cities.
The Kingdom is already the biggest economy in the region,
but the government has taken more steps recently to become
an easier place to do business and attract more companies to
the private sector. Instead of only relying on the size of its
economy, it has become a more welcoming place for foreign
investment. The introduction of numerous online portals, the
easing of processes and implementing new licenses all lead
into the larger goal of a diversified economy as laid out in
Vision 2030.
No company set up process can be discussed without
mentioning the role of Saudi Arabia General Investment
Authority (SAGIA) the entity itself has worked hard to not
only promote the Kingdom in key locations across the world
but also to streamline its processes in order to ease the process
for the companies it worked so hard to attract.
SAGIA is only a small part of the export process, however
important it is. There are other elements that happen after
setting up, which are important to operate in compliance
with the law.
In this white paper, we look to what the future of business
will look like in Saudi Arabia, the recent reforms of SAGIA
and the steps that companies need to take after they have
set up in the Kingdom.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

The limits are calculated each fiscal year depending on the total number
of employment-based visas available. No more than 7 percent of the
visas may be issued to natives of any one independent country in a fiscal
year. The per-country limit does not indicate, however, that a country is
entitled to the maximum number of visas each year, just that it cannot
receive more than that number.

Abbas Hashmi, who is an investment banker and involved in the EB-5
program, reveals that it has contributed to growth in many communi-
ties acrossthe country, so the Senate’s decision to continue the EB-5
is not surprising. Hashmi shares that the changes to the program will
make it more attractive to communities because it will be tied to the
consumer price index (CPI) starting in 2015. He explains that the goal
of this investment program is to help local economies grow in the
United States by boosting job creation…
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently indicted Illinois based Anshoo
Sethi for misleading about 250 Chinese investors by using the promise of EB-5 visas
to sell $145 million in securities to finance a hotel-cum-conference center that had
not yet received the necessary project clearances. This makes the task of legitimate
immigration consultants like Abbas Hashmi, and his firm, Long Island based Green
Card Capital, that much tougher. “Black Box investments with the promise of high
returns where little is known about the people or the project where the money is
going, is something we steer our clients away from.” The firm’s website also has a
section on EB-5 fraud listing the various scams to educate potential EB-5 applicants.
I believe when you want expand internationally you need to have true
global partners or local alliances who understand the market and are
accustomed to compliance, market space and customer expectations,
- Abbas Hashmi speaking to The Washington Times
Hashmi “truly understands all the different markets”. The fact that he understands
them all comes in handy, because Hashmi works with “high net worth individuals,
family offices and groups of people who are interested in relocating to the U.S. and
other parts of the world, using investment as a tool.
