She then shared some of the ways that children might be unsafe, such as neglect or emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Children were asked to identify trusted adults (parents, grandparents, teachers) they could talk to about worries and for each one given, she removed a 'worry block', The ChildLine helpline telephone number was given as another source of help and videos were shown of possible scenarios where it might help to talk to ChildLine. Paula will return on Tuesday to deliver NSPCC workshops for P6 and P7 pupils next week.
The theme for the Assembly was 'Your Voice Matters' and there have been several occasions recently when pupil views and ideas have been listened to at a high level: Living Streets UK CEO Joe Irvin and Rebecca Simpson Living Streets Scotland meeting with pupils last Friday; Walk to School Week supported by Living Streets; and an amazing day of NHS consultation workshops for P7 delivered by the team from Royal College of Paediatricians and Child Health (RCPCH) and consultant paediatricians from The Royal Hospital for Sick Children. RCPCH flew from London and were extremely impressed by our young people's engagement, creativity and effort. P6 have also been invited to participate in an exciting event to mark National Clean Air Day 2018 with the Transport Minister on 21st June and all of these wonderful opportunities are encouraging and empowering our pupils to speak up and speak out to make a difference.
Chiara and Amelia announced their bake sale for Amnesty International raised an incredible £320 and P5 pupils promoted the activities they are leading with P4 at Saturday's Year of Young People Summer Fair.
