The Bhopal gas tragedy was one of the world's worst industrial disasters that occurred in 1984 in Bhopal, India at a Union Carbide pesticide plant. A leak of methyl isocyanate and other gases from the plant resulted in exposure to thousands of people in the surrounding area. Over 3,000 deaths were confirmed by the government as being related to the gas release. Contributing factors included faulty safety systems at the plant, lack of trained operators, and storing of gases beyond recommended levels.
