It is the world's most consumed raw
material after water and an essential
ingredient to our everyday lives.
Sand is the primary substance used
in the construction of roads, bridges,
high-speed trains and even land
regeneration projects.

container glass for foods and beverages, and tableware.
Ground silica is required for production of fiberglass insulation and reinforcing

sand is around 18 kg per person on average.
Demand for sand is only expected to grow, as the
global population continues to climb, cities expand
and countries further develop. But in much of the
world, sand mining faces little to no government
scrutiny.

it can be mixed with lime or cement to create high-quality
mortar for plaster and for joining bricks or stone.

Sand is used for making concrete, mortars, and plasters and
also for filling under floor, basements.
Sand is also used with coarse aggregate and cement to create
concrete.

9. According to the Bangladesh Sand Mining and Merchants Association, the
market for sand has grown to Tk 700-Tk 800 crore , compared to around Tk
400-Tk 450 crore five-six years ago.
The annual growth of the sand industry is now 10-15 per cent.

10. Mega projects such as the Padma Bridge, Karnaphuli Tunnel, Metro Rail,
elevated expressway, highways, economic zones, ports, power plants,
modern offices and residential buildings have caused the demand for this
material to skyrocket, stakeholders told The Business Post.
