Mr. D was responsible for determining Sundstrand's stocking policy, including which parts to stock and where to stock them. The policy was to stock parts at as few locations as possible to minimize inventory costs and safety stock levels. Parts were typically only stocked at the warehouse closest to where the end product was assembled. Over time, as Sundstrand expanded operations, some common parts were stocked at a second location to more quickly supply distant repair centers. However, stocking parts in multiple locations generally increased inventory costs. Mr. D's recommendations were to stock spare parts at only one location, if possible, and keep that location close to the production warehouse.
