Samsung has been the leader in the emerging
“phablet” category since debuting the original
Galaxy Note in 2011. Now in its fifth generation,
the Galaxy Note series continues to improve as
a business multi-tasking and productivity tool.
The Galaxy Note 5 features a large 5.7-inch
display with Quad HD resolution. Samsung
has also enhanced its S Pen for greater
sensitivity and accuracy for an improved
writing experience.
The Galaxy Note 5 also offers features that IT
professionals will find useful in their day-to-day
work. For example, its adaptive, fast-charging
battery can recharge to full capacity in under
90 minutes. When the phone is nearly out of
power, its Ultra Power Saving Mode switches
the screen to gray scale to turn off power-
hungry apps and allow phone calls or texts. In
this mode at 10 percent, the Galaxy Note 5 can
last for a day.
The Galaxy Note also supports mobile security
features to meet IT compliance standards and
protect sensitive company data. Samsung
Knox™ Workplace enables users to maintain
two identities on their phones – one for work
and one for home. In work mode, all data is
hidden and protected through a fingerprint
swipe function. The Galaxy Note’s Multi
Window™ feature allows users to see and use
information from multiple applications at the
same time.
To gauge the Galaxy Note’s performance in
enterprise environments, Samsung provided
Galaxy Note 4 smartphones to several IT pros
in the Spiceworks Community, across multiple
industries, to test on (and off) the job. The
following case studies feature both current
Android users and non-Android users:
A Windows IT lead for the University of
Wisconsin in Madison who was so impressed
with the performance and display quality that
he dubbed the Galaxy Note his new “phone-
top-computer”
A systems administrator for an orthopedic
center in Tennessee who uses Knox
to maintain a balance between HIPAA
requirements at work and games at home
An IT director for the city of Conover in
North Carolina – and long-time non-Android
smartphone user – who found aspects of the
Galaxy Note “hands-down superior” to
his smartphone

eremy Maritz is the Windows team lead for the University of
Wisconsin in Madison. He and his team build and support
over 400 servers used by the university’s application
administrators and end users. As a long-time user of the Galaxy
Note® II, Maritz was eager to experience the new Galaxy Note 4
enhancements.
Maritz began using the Galaxy Note II about two years ago when
his non-Android smartphone contract ran out. At the time, he
noticed the Android apps market catching up with competitors
and wanted a bigger screen.
“I was tired of the tiny 3.5-inch screen and felt like I needed more
space to do my work,” he says. “So I jumped to the Galaxy Note
II because it was the biggest screen I could get at the time, and
there were just as many apps to choose from.”
Needless to say, Maritz has been extremely pleased with the
Galaxy Note 4’s larger 5.7-inch and Quad HD Super AMOLED
display with 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. These features make it
easier for him to run a VPN, check email and browse the internet
with several windows open at a time.
“The difference between the Galaxy Note II and Note 4 is like
night and day,” Maritz says. “It’s much more crisp in terms of

“[The Galaxy Note 4] is much more crisp in terms of
pixel density. Overall, the screen seems faster and
more responsive when running multiple windows

and see the screen, I feel like I’m using a

To keep the applications running throughout a
long workday, Maritz relies on a long battery
life and Ultra Low Power feature, which kicks
in when the phone reaches approximately 10
percent of its battery life. He’s woken up in
the morning to the phone in gray-scale mode
because he forgot to charge it overnight – but
after charging it for 30 minutes before work,
he’s set for the rest of the day.
All of these features combined give Maritz the
flexibility to conduct his work without carrying
a notebook or tablet to meetings. The VPN
connection, large screen, long battery life
and processing power keep him connected
wherever he is.
“I would say this is the only device I need to
carry around,” he says. “If I need to get onto
a server from a meeting, I can jump on the
campus Wi-Fi and get whatever I need. I don’t
have to worry about the screen being too small
or the controls being too clunky. The Galaxy
Note 4 does everything I need it to do.”

ennessee Orthopedic Alliance is the largest orthopedic group
in Nashville with 19 clinics throughout central Tennessee and
Kentucky. Systems Administrator Bob Mathison and a dozen
colleagues provide IT support to more than 500 employees and
dozens of surgeons. For Mathison, mobility and security go hand
in hand.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
security regulations require that all mobile devices with patient
data are secured and encrypted. That’s why when Mathison
began testing the Galaxy Note 4, he quickly tapped into Knox
Workplace. Knox enables him to maintain separate identities on
his Samsung smartphone – one for work and the other for home.
“Knox on the Galaxy Note 4 has enabled me to consolidate to
one phone with a second layer of security,” he says. “I can have
email and all of my work information on one part of the phone and
personal info on the other. Now if my kids play with my Galaxy
Note 4, which they will, I’m confident they won’t accidently
interact with any sensitive data. Plus I don’t worry about losing it,
because the Knox portal shows me exactly where my phone is.”
Mathison is a seasoned Android user, with the Galaxy S5, as well as
a user of non-Android smartphones. The Galaxy Note 4 gives him
the features, screen size and security that he needs – in one device.

“I absolutely love this phone. When I turn [it] sideways
and use Multi Window, it’s like having two phones. I
can move files and apps the way I need them on one
screen, which makes it feel like an actual desktop!”

Upon testing the Galaxy Note 4, he was initially
impressed with the screen size and resolution
paired with the Multi Window function, which
allows him to use email and other functions at
the same time. For example, when dialing into a
conference call, he no longer has to back out of
the call screen to locate the bridge password.
“I absolutely love this phone,” he says. “When I
turn the phone sideways and use Multi Window,
it’s like having two phones. I can move files and
apps the way I need them on one screen, which
makes it feel like an actual desktop!”
Mathison uses the S Pen to navigate
applications in the multi-screen environment,
including Citrix. In addition, he uses his Galaxy
Note 4 to log into VMware and Hyper-V to
check the status of his virtual machines.
“The larger screen and S Pen make it easier
for me to check these kind of things remotely
because in these apps, my finger just takes up
too much real estate on the screen,” he says.
“When using the S Pen I make fewer mistakes
and can work through the process more
quickly.”
Mathison relies on the Samsung battery and
power management features to keep his Galaxy
Note 4 up and running. Given the number of
internal clients and locations he serves, he
sometimes doesn’t know how long his day will
last or when he’ll have a chance to recharge.
The Ultra Power Saving mode helps ensure he
always has enough power to take a call or send
a text.
“When you’re working in IT, a normal day can
turn into an 18-hour day,” he says. “So you
have to make sure your phone stays charged.
As I run between offices working on a remote
project, it’s a godsend to have enough juice to
carry me through the day.”

efore testing the Galaxy Note 4, IT Director Chris Niver
was unfamiliar with Samsung smartphones. However
after a few weeks, he believes he has just scratched the
surface of what the device is capable of doing.
Niver is the only source of IT support for employees of the
City of Conover in North Carolina. He supports all aspects of
municipal services including water, waste, roads, police and
fire departments. After just a short time with the Galaxy Note
4, he appreciates its most obvious advantages – size and
screen clarity.
“I’ve been impressed with the display, which is phenomenal,”
he says. “I had both phones side by side recently when I
was reviewing a PDF file about an upcoming conference.
Viewing the texts and images on the Galaxy Note 4 was
hands-down superior to what I was used to seeing on my
non-Android smartphone. Not only was the screen resolution
and crispness of the image better, but I could see everything
onscreen without having to zoom in or scroll.”
Niver thinks the Galaxy Note 4 has several features that
will work well in the enterprise, including the S Pen, built-in
productivity apps, dual screen and Multi Window capabilities.
On several occasions, Niver has used the Galaxy Note 4
with multiple windows and applications open without any
noticeable dips in performance.

The S Pen provided an alternative to using the
keyboard when his fingers were sometimes
too large for the non-Android smartphone
keyboard, especially when he used the pen to
jot down notes or emails. Built-in productivity
apps complemented the enterprise apps that
he could pull from the Android market, like a
Wi-Fi analyzer.
“I think that as people spend more time with
this device, they’re going to find more and
more things that are just phenomenal,” he says.
“The S Pen is a great example. The accuracy
and precision of this pen are incredible. Some
people might think it’s just something extra that
they might lose or have to learn how to use. But
as they use it over time, they’ll discover it’s a
natural extension of the device.”
