1. Sample Letters to Remove Inquiries
If you have reason to believe that a hard inquiry which appeared on your credit was made
without your authorization, you should send a letter to the creditor telling them to remove it.
Like all correspondences directed to creditors, debt collection agencies, and credit bureaus,
be sure to send your letter via certified mail with return receipt requested so you have a
record of all documentation in case they refuse to budge and you have to bring the matter to
the State Banking Commission.
Here are some samples of letters you can send to your creditors to have them remove the
hard inquiries.

RE: Unauthorized Credit Inquiry
Dear Sir/Madam (if you know the name of the person in charge, the better),
I have recently obtained a copy of my (write the name of credit bureau—Experian,
TransUnion, Equifax) credit report. It showed a credit inquiry by your company that I do not
recall authorizing. It is my understanding that you are not allowed to put an inquiry on my
file unless I have given you express authorization to do so. Please have this inquiry
removed from my credit report because it is affecting my loan applications and making it
very difficult for me to acquire credit.
I have sent this letter through certified mail inasmuch as I need your prompt response to this
issue. Please be so kind as to forward me documentation that you have already had the
unauthorized inquiry removed.
However, should you find that I am remiss and that you did have my authorization to inquire
into my credit report then please send me proof of this fact.

This letter is your formal notice to cease the unauthorized hard inquiries you are making into
my (insert the name of the credit bureau here) credit report. This is also a formal demand
for you to immediately contact the credit reporting agencies and credit bureaus, where your
organization has made inquiries into my credit history, to have these illegal inquiries
removed. Be advised that I will be checking my reports to ensure you have had the
following unauthorized inquiries taken off my credit report:
Line Item: (write the number)
Made by: (name of company or person making the inquiry)
Made on: (date of inquiry)
Made with: (name of credit reporting agency)
To the best of my knowledge, I have not signed any documents authorizing your
organization to view my credit history. As such, your inquiry into my credit report violates the
Fair Credit Reporting Act, Section 1681b(c): Transactions Not Initiated by Consumer.
If you have any document that you believe authorizes you or your organization to make the
aforementioned inquiry/inquiries into my credit report, I respectfully request that a copy of it
be sent to my address so that I may verify its validity. Given the growing cases of identity
theft, I'm sure that you'll agree with me that verification will protect both our interests.
In the event that you do not possess my authorization, I request that once you have
removed all unauthorized inquiries from my credit profiles, you should also remove all of my
personal information from your records. Please send me confirmation that you have
complied with these requests.
