This document summarizes a workshop on the Saltgae project, which received funding from the European Union to develop a pilot site in Camporosso, Italy for treating dairy wastewater using algae. The 0.5 hectare pilot site uses a multi-stage process including pretreatment, algae growth in photobioreactors, harvesting, and drying to remove nutrients from the wastewater and produce algae biomass. The workshop aimed to explain how the system was designed and currently operates to convert wastewater from a liability to a useful resource.

• Pilot site at demo scale (0,5 ha) aiming to medium-low COD and
low salinity dairy water treatment with cost effective nutrient
removal by multistage process.
• System design engineering: pretreatment by rotoscreening and
DAF by BBA, installed, commissioned, working.
• Algae three step photosynthetic field : 2x8000 GWP2 ℗ pbrs for
inoculum, 530 m2 growth RWP, 1280 m2 starvation RWP,
installed, covered under greenhouse, actually running with
Spirulina.
• Nannochloropsis biomass available as well
• Standard (Archimede technology, UF and centrifuge combined
high efficiency process) harvesting and drying
