The Sakai CLE is an open-source software collaboration and learning environment that provides users with learning and portfolio tools. It began as research projects in the 1990s and recognized a common need in the 2000s, receiving funding in 2003. The Sakai Foundation is a non-profit organization that governs the software, which is freely available and customizable. Sakai aims for scalability, extensibility, flexibility, and separation of concerns technically. It supports e-learning, communication, content management, and access control.
