This short story is set in Florence at nighttime. The protagonist, a painter, is feeling uninspired as the rain threatens to fall. He stands on his balcony looking up at the dark sky, lost in thought with his art and inventions left aside. Though he never felt guilty about his work before, he now feels ashamed that he cannot follow the perfect orders of his patrons. He understands they only want art the masses will understand, but does not understand why people's minds are so weak and unwilling to question and seek more answers.
