SAFETY PRACTICES IN
AN ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION
MAKING PERSONNEL SAFETY A PRIORITY
Safety threats pertaining to the environment need major
attention. Hence, metallic or non-metallic fences are
installed along the perimeter of the substation to prevent
incidents of trespassing, a stray animal entering into the
premises and deliberate scaling. Appropriate signboards
aretobeplacedonthefencing.
SECURE SUBSTATION PREMISES
To reduce or prevent accidents by the entry of visitors
should be strictly prohibited. In case of unavoidable
situations, the visitors can be accompanied by an
authorisedperson.
PROHIBIT VISITOR ACCESS
Itisnecessarytoalwaysmonitorandguidevehiclesthatare
entering the substation premises to see that the vehicle
doesn't touch overhead lines and elevated equipment in
thesubstation.
MONITOR VEHICULAR TRAFFIC
Unwanted storage of equipment and other materials
always happens in substations leading to unwanted
risks and an increase in footfall during the shifting of
these materials. It also attracts thieves to look out for
expensiveelectricalequipment/components.
PROHIBIT EQUIPMENT STORAGE
The sources of chemical hazards are called battery
storage units which need to be well protected
with authorised access. Although these areas should
be well ventilated, regularly maintained and
thoroughly checked for acid leaks which are common
inbatteries.
SECURE BATTERY STORAGE
Training an individual is the most important safety
practice to understand threats prevailing in the
work environment. It provides the worker with all
the technical know-how of every piece of
equipment. It helps in a better understanding of the
risk involved and the levels of protection required
intheworkarea.
TRAINING PERSONNEL
Flame retardant/arc-rated/ chemical resistant clothing,
gloves, safety glasses, shields, face masks, hard hats, and
