Continuous Deployment is defined as automatically deploying code changes to production after tests pass. Safecast feb 2015

Fukushima Indpendent Inivestigation Committee report
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident was caused by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. This disaster destroyed backup generators and cooling systems, resulting in nuclear meltdowns. Over 900 interviews were conducted and the causes and response were analyzed. Deficiencies were found in disaster preparedness, regulation, and the prioritization of safety. Recommendations were made to prevent future accidents through improved oversight and organizational culture change.

Miles O'Brien and Joe Moross: Inside Daiichi
Miles O'Brien and Joe Moross went inside the damaged Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan to inspect the damage following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. They found that while the exterior of some of the reactor buildings were damaged, the critical components inside were still intact. Their inspection provided valuable information about the condition of the plant to help guide the response and recovery efforts.

Nitobi/PhoneGap at Bootup 2011
Nitobi was moving from products to services in 2007-2008 and faced a choice between specializing or remaining agnostic in their technology stack. They chose to remain agnostic and focused on being web-based. As mobile trends emerged, they began experimenting with mobile development which led to the creation of PhoneGap in 2008 to build mobile apps using web technologies. Since then, PhoneGap has grown significantly and Nitobi's business has evolved to focus more on services related to mobile development.
Bringing CD to the DoD

Safecast seminar aug 6th
- Safecast is a volunteer-based organization that was created after the 2011 Japan earthquake to measure and map radiation levels across Japan using mobile and fixed radiation sensors.
- They have deployed over 15 mobile "bGeigie" sensors in cars and 75 handheld sensors, collecting over 500,000 measurements to map radiation levels.
- The data collected includes levels of radioactive isotopes like Cesium-134/137 and areas of higher radiation called "hotspots." All data is openly available online.
- Safecast aims to have 1000 sensors deployed in Japan within a year and is collaborating with other groups to further study radiation measurement methods and deployment of fixed sensor networks.

Nitobi/PhoneGap at Bootup 2011
Nitobi was moving from products to services in 2007-2008 and faced a choice between specializing or remaining agnostic in their technology stack. They chose to remain agnostic and focused on being web-based. Safecast has been called "the most successful citizen science project yet." Started in March, 2011 in response to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Powerplant accident, it initially focussed on collecting and publishing independent radiation measurements from affected areas in Japan but quickly achieved global scale. The open Safecast radiation database now contains over 75 million measurements, the largest of it's kind ever. In addition to gaining influence within the IAEA and other corners of the radiation expert community, it has become the subject of research by data analysis and visualization specialists. This presentation will describe key aspects of the Safecast project, its primary principles, and lessons learned that may be of relevance to others seeking to implement similar environmental monitoring projects.

Why open?: Openness is built into every aspect of the Safecast project. Why is this important?

Safecast Report Vol. 2 - 2016 Executive Summary
1) Safecast is a citizen science project that collects environmental data through mobile and stationary sensors. It has grown significantly since 2011 and now has over 43 million radiation measurements spanning over 70 countries.
2) Safecast classifies its projects into three categories: Drivecast for mobile sensors, Pointcast for stationary sensors, and Pocketcast for sensors that pair with mobile devices. Its flagship mobile radiation sensor is the bGeigie Nano.
3) Key Safecast activities and developments discussed include expanding mobile and stationary radiation networks, collaborating with local governments on city-wide radiation mapping, developing a sensor sharing program, and publishing its first peer-reviewed scientific paper on its methodology.
