“Safety at a Click” SAFEBANGLE TECHNOLOGIES
THEMATIC CHALLENGE
1 in 3 women experience GBV.
The victims have difficulty accessing support and
avenues to hold perpetrators accountable.
In Uganda, more than half of the cases of violence go
unreported.
WHY REPORTING IS STILL A CHALLENGE
The available methods are not
effective to reach the right
people.
The available tools are expensive
and often imported.
The existing mobile applications
are challenging to maneuver in
times of distress.
Limited trust in confidentiality
of existing reporting
SafeBangle is a discrete,
personal safety device,
that can be worn
around the wrist and
used to call for
assistance in case of
danger.

WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW
• Upgrading design of encasing to respond to user requirements (culturally
acceptable, attractive) (identifying a design company )
• Looking for larger-scale suppliers
• Finalize data-collection tools to collect feedback from potential users (NGOs and
girls/women directly) - including insights on web system.
• Identifying the data to be displayed on the dashboard (different user profiles) -
integration with user research findings
• Preparation of field pilot visit
PRIORITIES 2020
• Finalization of a ready-for-market prototype and launch
• Making a pilot research study in rural and urban community.
• Adjusting to changes from the results feedback in the pilot study.
• Fundraising & securing additional partnerships
• Launching production
 Finalize MVP for real-life user-piloting
 Have SafeBangle tested and approved to be used all around the country
 Setup mini-plant to reduce production and delivery time of SafeBangle
 Have 500 (active) users
 At least 100 violence cases resolved using data from the SafeBangle system
 At least 100 paying customers
VISION 2021
We believe…..
With SafeBangle, cases of violence that would have
gone unreported will be brought to light and the
would-be victims will be able to get immediate help
from trusted relatives and friends.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 SafeBangle is a social enterprise based in Uganda dedicated to designing and developing solutions for women to end all forms of violence starting from sexual assaults to child bullying for a violence free future. We are a multidisciplinary team of 5 recent graduates that started in 2018; 3 men and 2 women A lightweight wearable safety device which can help foster immediate reporting to eliminate all harmful practices of violence against all women and girls.
  • #3 However, these people who are victims don’t know where to report and how to do it. Additionally, these activities happen in risky times for women and girls are in the early or late hours when they go to work or school. GBV exposes many women to compromised health, dignity and personal safety.
  • #4 Despite existing efforts in promoting GBV reporting, the rates are still low because of a number of factors including: Cost Complex Confidential They desperately want an urgent family friend kind of Emergency Rescue Services that could be used to call for help and support in case of an emergency, something simple and direct to address the issues as soon as possible. While new solutions are constantly being developed, none of the current solutions reaches them
  • #5 SafeBangle is small and designed to disguise the already existing African bracelets, affordable compared to other smart watch devices which cost over one hundred dollars and mobile applications which needs monthly internet subscription to work. How it works Uniqueness……Private, No need for a phone and single click Why use the above designs; We are using the design above because they are culturally appropriate We have been working on designing components as illustrated in the photo below
  • #7 1. During the events attended by the team, the women and girls interviewed need a culturally acceptable smart bracelet for camouflage and disguise 2. The first testing of the components without the GPS, this model worked but consumes a lot of power and the battery over heats. 3. Description of the Photo. On the left, the first 3D print of the bracelet components, This is work still under progress ( the team is working greatly with focus on size) 4. Description. 5 The device stretches on side of the arm to easy and fit different arm sizes
  • #14 Challenges Covid 19 a big challenge in particular in terms of supply chain but now better focused, more efficient digital meetings and more cost-efficient too. The team members got more opportunities to reflect. For the way forward: not high risk as suppliers have resumed – however higher costs of DHL compared with the bus-transporter used in the past. Important to budget these increased costs in the budget. Think about finding local alternatives for some of the components and developing local production (longer-term) Maybe find partners with whom to group orders for cost sharing (ex: Fundibots)
  • #17 If anything was possible, this is where we would like SafeBangle to be in one year?
