When Ruskin was eight years old, his mother
separated from his father. When he was ten, his
father died during the war. He was thoroughly
heartbroken. Later, he was raised by his mother
and stepfather who lived in Dehradun.

The head librarian of his school realised his
passion of reading and appointed him as
in-charge of the library.
Bond started his career as a freelance
writer, penning short stories and poems for
newspapers and magazines.

The novel ‘The Blue Umbrella’ is one of his best
known works.
Received SahityaAcademy Award in
1992
Awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 and
Padma Bhushan in 2014.
Known as the "Indian William
Wordsworth", Ruskin Bond's wide range
of short stories, novels, essays and poems
have inspired generations of Indians.
Bond's first novel, The Room on the Roof,
written when he was seventeen, received
the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in
1957.

With a writing career spreading over more than 50 years, he has explored different
avenues regarding an assortment of types – apart from novels, he has composed a few
expositions, short stories, novellas, children’s books and poems
Bond has authored more than 500 short stories, essays, and novels, including 64 books
for children.
