What do they do? What do they eat? Are their lives similar to ours? Rural life in Korat :D What are their jobs? By. Seoyoung, Lee What kind of animals do they keep? Where do they live?
Picture of the king of Thailand Photos or pictures of the king is fairly easy to find in Thailand. I knew that Thai people respected and loved their king. However, after visiting the village, looking at tons and tons of photos of the king, I realized how much they cared and regarded their ruler.
When I arrived to the village, I was shocked by how much lack of technology/ electricity they had. I wondered how they took shower, or kept their foods. However, people said that the pits were where they stored their water and used it when they were taking a shower. I was astounded by the creativity and the intelligence of the villagers.
Looking at this old woman made me feel guilty and bad. Her house was filthy, messy, and weak. She had to collect the boughs to heat up the fire. I realized how contenting and pleasing my life was.
Since people in the village don’t have a technology or other entertainments (internet), some of them enjoy their time by playing with their pets. Although it might not seem so entertaining, it looks better than urban citizens getting influenced by the technology.
In the village, most of the snacks and candies are sold in a reusable plastic container. I didn’t know whether they used these to help stop the pollution or because they didn’t have enough money to buy good ones, but it made me realize that there were lots of things I could do to help the world.
The foods the villagers ate were not so different from what urban people eat. They usually eat Thai noodle for lunch, with lots of chilies. In my opinion, the reason they eat spicy foods so much is because of the hot climate they have to endure.
Most of the babies in the rural region of the country are raised more freely and differently than babies raised in the urban region of the country. I felt really bad when I saw the little girl sweating like a soaked up towel.
The body of water which looked like a river is a big part of rural life. People often spend their time swimming in the water or bathing. Also, lots of animals and plants depend on it.
Spirit houses are very easy to find around the village. I think this is because the villagers pray and ask for their gods’ help to keep the village safe. Since the village is small and not so developed, they often rely on their beliefs and religion.
Toys, and other extra stuffs are normally kept outside of the house because there are not much space s inside. However, even if the stuffs are outside, they are usually unorganized and spread around unevenly. I could feel how difficult and uncomfortable their lives would be opposed to ours.
In order to decrease the amount of time working and to increase the convenience, people use this transporter in the photo to transport large quantity of burden (plants).
At least 2 types of animals are tamed by each villagers. Such as cows, ducks, chickens, dogs, cats, turkeys, and etc. Most of them are used for works or for people’s foods. Unlike animals raised in farms, these animals are rather more inartificial.
The place where they keep their surplus (such as rice sacks, toys, tools, etc) is usually under their houses. It’s very messy and dirty. However, I could still notice the intelligence of them by looking at how thoughtfully they made their houses’ bottom higher in order to create an extra space underneath.
Unlike some animals that are healthy, some are very sick or dead by not getting enough foods to eat or eating foods that have changed because of the temperature. Looking at this dead chicken made me feel sick. I wondered why they kept the dead thing.
One other difference we have opposed to the Korat villagers is that they wash their cloths by their hands but we wash ours automatically by the laundry machine. I once again felt how convenient and important the technology we had was.
The transportation villagers use (cars, motorcycles, bicycles) are very similar to ours but they are much older and broken. I don’t think people really care about how their cars/ motorcycles look like or how worthy they are because they don’t move around for a long time and only go short distance.
Weavers in Korat, country side work on the ground the whole day without air conditioner. When I saw this skinny old man weaving with no shirt, I was both impressed and guilty.
People in different regions in Korat all have different jobs. And a big part or them are farmers. Farmer is the most important job in Thailand. There are many hard working steps to get a rice we get in grocery stores , and I was amazed and impressed by how well the farmers could work under the burning heat walking on the mud.
Another common job people have in Korat is making potteries. Huge amount of effort, long period of time, and advanced skills are required in order to make one pottery. Every single one of them are delicate and hand made.
This Korat trip taught me many things I wouldn’t have learned in school. Thank you for watching my digital story essay!!!
