Natalie is a new graduate nurse who now has to face some
negating appropriate behaviors with the patients, co-workers
and medical staff. There is a lot she needs to learn such as role
strain that includes the incongruity, and some other major roles
such as the requirement in learning to get used to managing
complicated equipment and medications. In her line of work

2. there, some issues may occur such as power/authority and
domination. Two nurses are trying to hold on to their power as
they are observing Natalie as a threat since they are more
experienced, but Natalie holds an advanced degree. Natalie has
noted that she lacks reciprocity in their relationships with the
other two experienced AND nurses. At this time she feels as
though she should withdraw from the scene. In her quest to
resolve the issue she meets her professor to discuss the issue.
Her professor offers her some recommendations which he thinks
will be of assistance to her. She should not do anything at this
time. The behaviors of the other nurses are common, especially
to a novice. Time will prove how ready she will become. She
should try and embark on the conflict and try to think about the
other two nurse’s perspective. She should speak about her
sentiments now to the other two nurses that she is a brand new
Registered nurse and have a prolonged learning period
(McEwen, 2014). The department of sociology can assist in
understanding people and groups of people when interacting
with one another in some social settings. There are sociological
concepts such as utilitarianism, which dates back to hundreds of
years, and have influenced some of the theorists into working in
the areas of the exchange theories and others such as the
interaction theory, conflict theory. When trying to understand
how the hospital nurses work the sociological theory can assist
in understanding the underlying conflicts and behaviors between
employees.
One specific theory that can be utilized in the case is the Role
theory. Natalie is feeling the “role strain or role stress.” As a
brand new nurse in the hospital, she is overwhelmed with the
numerous tasks that she must complete during her shift; she is
also in conflict since the other two nurses that she has met there
are unhelpful, and not welcoming at all. The role theory points
out to both parties that are involved, in the case Natalie is a
‘Newbie,’ although likely to get a higher remuneration than the
nurses she has met. Natalie is uncertain about her role since it is
her first time to practice, but her coworkers are not assisting her

3. to get used to the new role (McEwen, 2014). As a new nurse, it
is essential to negotiate appropriate role behaviors with the
patients, co-workers and the general medical staff.
Through structural theory, it is apparent that experience plays a
huge role compared to the education earned. Therefore,
although the other two nurses are behind in their educational
qualifications, their roles an experiences that run for ten years
has taught them the essential things of the nursing care. It
includes taking care of the patients, making sure the needs of
patients are met and quality communication. The creation of a
rapport and communication is very important when it comes to
the nursing profession (McEwen, 2014). Natalie is finding it
hard to cope with the busy schedule that is there in the ICU and
the monitoring of the equipment and medications. She spends a
lot of time there such that she does not have enough time to
focus on communication and interaction skills.
Natalie should exercise the conflict theory, through accepting
that the other two nurses are threatened by her since she is more
learned than they are and she is likely to overtake them. It is
hard for them to hold on to their positions since the employment
field is requiring advanced types of degrees for the employees.
A lot of novice nurses are opting to go back to school to
maintain their current position in the hospital.
Natalie is in a dilemma, but it can be resolved through the
realization of what is going on here. The other nurses are trying
to negotiate their roles here while at the same time attempting
to keep her in her position. If she would realize all these, then
she would stand a better chance of improving and consequently
reduce the stress that she is currently experiencing. It would be
prudent that she has a conversation with the serving supervisor
since she requires someone who is supportive of her as she
resolves the current conflict. She also needs to approach her
coworkers and tell them about what she feels about their doing
that is making her fail before she even gets a chance to get used
to her job. Natalie needs to choose what is the best approach
that will amicably resolve the situation in the department.

4. In conclusion, Natalie needs to keep quiet as she gets used to
knowing the job and gain the necessary knowledge from the
other two AND nurses from experience. If Natalie is not
rejected, she is more likely to take a distinct approach and
appreciate them through being nice. It would assist her in a
great way in resolving her situation.

6. Nursing Theorists
Nursing as a profession has been in demand and evolving over
the years. There was a time it did not have the popularity as it
has in the modern world. Over the years, different researchers
have contributed to the evolution of nursing which have made it
better in teaching and practice. Each researcher contributed
unique content that they studied for years and now form basic
guidelines of modern nursing both in education and in practice.
In this paper, the theorist that will be studied is Virginia
Henderson. The paper will discuss her contribution to modern
nursing and explain why she was chosen for this evaluation.
To start with, among the many very important nursing theorist,
the video of Virginia Henderson was chosen for various reasons.
Virginia has been referred to as the Nightingale of Modern
Nursing. This means that she was a very important tool that
forms a very strong pillar of modern day nursing. She authored
the book that defines the nature and responsibilities of nurses.
She defines the role and activities that are carried out by nurses
and explains them in details (Henderson, 1991). She also
defines the principles and standard practices of nursing that are
very crucial in the nursing profession. All these contributions
are worth understanding and this is the main reason why this
theorist’s video was picked.
The theorist has different explanations and philosophy that
define the modern-day nursing career. One of the theorist
beliefs concerning the nursing career is the roles of the nurses.
Virginia describes the different activities of nursing in which
she lists 14 main activities. These activities I agree with as it is
very evident they form a crucial part of nursing in general.
Another fact listed in the video that I agree with is the nursing
roles. Nurses have three cardinal roles which include doing for
the patient, helping the patient and working with the patient.
Nurses perform these roles every day; for all the patients, when
the patients cannot perform the roles and where the patient is
instructed by the nurse on how to perform the tasks (NOWSKI,

7. 2013). While watching this video, I was surprised by a very
unique statement; the statement that defines the unique function
of a nurse. This statement is familiar to me and I have known it
for a very long time. What came as a surprise is that the
statement was defined by Virginia Henderson.
I would recommend this video to other nursing students for the
content that is available in the video. The video contains the
historical journey and the contribution of one of the popular
theorists in the field of nursing. It can work as a motivation for
the students to explore further than the class work so as to
ensure that the nursing profession grows even further. The
theorist defines the activities and roles of nurses that are core to
the modern nursing. The video can inspire the students to
understand that the profession has evolved through the years
and it encompasses a wider commitment than just a profession.
The video has a rich contribution to the life of a person and
specifically almost everything a nurse should know. The
different roles and nature of the nursing job discussed in the
video are a valuable information that can be applied to ensure
that the services offered by a nurse are of high quality. The
video also gives information on the evolution of the nursing
profession which is a very important motivation tool for
students who value dynamic careers that can help them grow.

Comparing Case Study Lessons with Related Theories
The case study’s theoretical analysis and evaluation expound
how Jerry deems it fit to depict the relationship between the
effectiveness of health teaching at home and at the hospital
environment. He intends to achieve this objective by gathering
data related to the quality of information and professional
competencies from the two settings to aid in assessing the
utilization of healthcare. Such information is important because
of the dire need to utilize the same in reducing the duration
taken to deliver home health services, to improve hospital
readmissions, and lessening the continued development of
complications. Therefore, he uses Maslow’s theory of need,
which proclaims that an individual will only continue pursuing
growth when his/her personal needs have not been met and
he/she will continue seeking development to attain his/her full
potential.
Again, the case study presents the concept of theory description,
which reviews the works of other theorists based on historical

9. contexts. Again, it depicts the works of other authors to relate
the structural and functional assertions of the theory as regards
their assumptions, propositions, and concepts. Therefore, we
can relate this concept to Virginia’s Henderson Need Theory
that prioritizes an increased patient’s independence to eliminate
possible problems resulting from delayed progress after
hospitalization. Therefore, her theory proposed a substitutive,
supplementary, and complimentary nursing care to empower the
patient to be independent. Henderson’s need theory relates the
ideas of various authors to the unique roles of the caregiver in
assisting the patient to effectively undertake activities that
contribute to health and recuperation or even peaceful death
(Roussel, n.d).
Comparing the Case Study with My Nursing Practice, Giving
Examples
I have applied the accurate conceptual framework addressed in
the case study to fully accomplish my research project based on
existing health promotion models. The ability to relate the key
concepts of the model to theoretical assumptions and linkages
was as a result of the need to identify criteria and develop
mechanisms for better health outcomes (Roussel, n.d). This
aligned with Maslow’s propositions of the theory of human
need. Therefore, it aided in evaluating the extent to which
theories accomplish their missions and recommending possible
actions to further develop the theories to attain better nursing
results.
Furthermore, I applied the concept of need as depicted by
Maslow’s human needs theory in nursing practice. Maslow’s
nursing theory takes into account, the needs and goals of
patients in every activity and requires that healthcare
professionals must always collaborate with their colleagues
(Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015). By so doing, the process of care
delivery will focus on patient strengths all over the shift since it
will remind clients on improvements. This will motivate
patients and address their goals and this will automatically

10. prioritize patient goals and lead to the achievement of
consistent results. Precisely, Maslow’s human needs theory
informed my knowledge on how to cater to the needs of the
patients before meeting any other obligation in healthcare
practice (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015).
Still, the case study’s theory analysis critically examines the
content, structure, and function of the theory to determine if it
is applicable in practice, research, or administration (Ahtisham
& Jacoline, 2015). Therefore, a clear understanding of the
theory facilitates a successful evaluation of the applicability of
the theory in the nursing knowledge base. This implies that the
theory evaluation is a concept that assesses how the theory can
be directly applied in nursing practice and interventions and the
analysis of whether or not it leads to favorable outcomes.
Therefore, the concept enabled me to relate Henderson’s ideas
regarding enabling the patient to gain independence as fast as
possible based on individual care programs in real life nursing
environment (Kieft, Brouwer, Francke & Delnoij, 2014). I was
able to deliver quality healthcare services, ensuring a quicker
recovery and in some instances, facilitated peaceful deaths as
regards Henderson’s fourteen components of effective nursing
care (Kieft, et al, 2014). Hence, the relationship between the
human need theory and the depictions of the case study
ascertains that recognizing caring needs, delivery, and
evaluation of holistic care are based on patient empowerment.
Ideally, the case study provides specific features that clearly
characterize significant nursing theories that are applicable to
the healthcare system. For instance, it asserts that a valid theory
in nursing practice must have a particular scope, complexity,
must be useful, testable, and depict specific values of the
theorist (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015). This implies that it must
be able to generate information for use in assessing the patient’s
condition to provide criteria for clear recording of useful
information with the correct healthcare terminology. Therefore,
similar models to gather both dependable and valid information
about the patients’ health conditions to advance the value of

11. nursing services (Kieft, et al, 2014). Hence, this concept
validates the relevance of both Maslow’s and Henderson’s
theories in nursing practice because they arrive at testable
hypotheses.
Finally, I applied the theories in nursing practice to avoid
probable prejudices and instead, make values and propositions
underlying the theories more explicit to meet the desire to
satisfy patients’ needs. Therefore, it is evident how I applied
the theories to fit nursing practice into the already established
theoretical outline through the establishment of positive
relationships with the care delivery system. However, it is a
good idea to integrate nursing curricula education and practice
to align with the needs of the patients and staff to effectively
meet clients’ needs (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015). This is what
Maslow’s human needs model of nursing aims at achieving by
its continued emphasis on patients’ challenges that can be
lessened by universally meeting their needs.
