The Roman Catholic Church sold indulgences that were said to reduce time spent in purgatory after death, but Martin Luther did not believe purgatory had any effect. The Church also broke their vows of celibacy by marrying and demanded payment from people to view religious relics that were often fake. Additionally, Kings regularly fought with Popes over money collected from taxes by the Church, such as when Emperor Henry IV was excommunicated for appointing his own bishop instead of the Pope's choice.
