6. How to paraphrase
● Avoid repeating yourself
● Avoid quoting someone else exactly
● Change your vocabulary (and do not repeat)
● Develop your own 'voice' in your writing (MKBU)
(Ellis)
7. CHARACTERISTICS
● recasts the original passage in your own words and
sentence structures
● includes the main ideas and supporting details from the
original passage
● is usually as long as long as the original passage
● preserves the technical terms from the original passage
● is often introduced with a signal phrase that gives credit
to the author (In Smith’s opinion...)
● includes an in-text citation and a bibliographic entry
8. Importance of Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is important because it shows you understand the source well enough to write it in
your own words. It also gives you a powerful alternative to using direct quotes, which should be
used infrequently.
● It is a useful way to use source material for your research paper/essay - providing it is
appropriately referenced. In academic essays, it is not acceptable to just copy and paste a
source, add a reference and PRESTO! Finished essay!
● You need to use a variety of direct quotes (referenced), indirect quotes or paraphrases
(referenced), and your own comments.(“Paraphrasing, Student administration”)
● paraphrasing can also show learners’ understanding of the source text and demonstrates
how well they can read and write in their second language. (Xuan)
● it prevents learners from plagiarizing as experienced L2 writers who are familiar with
paraphrasing techniques have been found to rely less on source texts than their novice
peers (Keck).
9. When to Paraphrase
1. Summarizing others' ideas in your own words to show understanding
and avoid too much quoting.
2. Explaining complex concepts using simpler language to make them
easier to understand.
3. Reporting information from a source using different words to show
comprehension.
4. Matching a specific writing style or tone by paraphrasing source
material.
5. Condensing lengthy quotes to include only essential points.
However, you should use direct quotes when:
1. The original wording is technical or legally precise.
2. The words are particularly memorable or impactful.
3. Analyzing specific word choices or rhetorical techniques.
10. Benefits of Paraphrasing
Effective paraphrasing is considered as an important part of academic
skill (Bailey).
Paraphrasing helps writers understand the source text better.
1.It lets writers use information without directly quoting it. Some sources may
not be strong enough to quote directly.
2. paraphrasing helps writers share accurate ideas from sources in their own
words, making it easier for readers to understand(Bazerman).
14. Here's how to rewrite a short piece. This one is from a book by Bailey, written in 2011.
There has been much debate about the reasons for the industrial revolution
happening in eighteenth-century Britain, rather than in France or Germany.
Paraphrased,
Why the industrial revolution occurred in Britain in the eighteenth century, instead of on the
continent, has been the subject of considerable discussion.(Bailey )
The example shows how Bailey (2011) takes the main idea from the original passage and puts
it into her own words. This helps us understand how to do a good paraphrase. It's crucial for
research papers to use paraphrasing effectively to ensure accuracy and validity.
15. Paraphrasing is an important skill. It means restating ideas from other sources in
your own words. Paraphrasing shows you understand the material. It lets you
explain things clearly using simpler language. Paraphrasing helps you blend
sources naturally into your own writing. While some quotes are okay, you should
mostly paraphrase. Learning to paraphrase well will make your writing better. It
prevents copying word-for-word accidentally. Paraphrasing is a useful skill for
school, work, and life.
