It has been a great start to 2012 celebrating the
contribution of people and communities in our City.
As I said in the recently released Annual Report, “The
City of Rockdale is a City of opportunities, strong local
communities... we look forward to a vibrant future and
I am proud of what we have accomplished and continue
to achieve in our City”.
The New Year arrived with a bang with the ‘Best Ever’
fireworks display on Lady Robinsons Beach, and 50
residents will never forget Australia Day 2012 as they
became citizens of our Nation in a moving ceremony at
Peter Depena Reserve. The City also celebrated the Year
of the Dragon and acknowledged the contribution of the
Chinese Community in Chinese New Year celebrations.
The school year is also under way. I want to recommend
to you some of the services in Council’s libraries for
students. Intrepica is a free online resource aimed at
helping children with literacy. Our libraries also provide
the Your Tutor service which connects students to
expert Australian tutors when they need assistance. Both
services are free for members of Council’s libraries.
As always, I welcome your feedback and look forward to
working with you for our City’s even greater future.

A Unique Identity
for the Rockdale
Town Centre
Council has prepared a draft Masterplan for the
Rockdale Town Centre.
The Masterplan aims to establish a unique identity for
the Rockdale Town Centre, creating a vibrant, lively and
pedestrian-friendly environment which builds on the
existing character and strengths of the centre.
Part of Council’s Thriving Town Centre initiative, the
Masterplan shows the heart of Rockdale redesigned to
improve access for pedestrians, encourage shopping,
provide a meeting place for the community, as well as
making the area safer by day and night.
Strategies will also be included in the Masterplan to
make vehicle access and parking more convenient whilst
making areas safer for pedestrians.
The Plan will soon be placed on exhibition for
comment from the public. Check Council’s website
wwww.rockdale.nsw.gov.au for the latest information

Council Wants
Your Opinion
Council is organising two different surveys in the month
of February to identify the community’s perception on
Council’s delivery of services and facilities.
The first survey looks at customer satisfaction with
the Development Applications (DA) process. This
survey is online and a link will be emailed to randomly
selected applicants, landowners and neighbours who
had involvement in a development application process
during 2011. The questions will focus on how Council
treated you throughout the DA process.
The Community Survey focuses on community
satisfaction. It will be conducted by Micromex Research
on behalf of Council and they will telephone 500
randomly selected residents across our City. The
questions will focus on your experiences dealing with
Council, accessing Council’s website and Council’s
general services and facilities.
Both surveys will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes
and your participation will be kept anonymous. Results
will be reported to Council for planning and improving
our services.
For more information contact Council’s Customer
Service Centre on 9562 1666.
Keith Boog, the coordinator of the new Men’s Shed at
the Arncliffe Community Centre is a proud man. He is
proud of what the Men in Arncliffe have achieved with
their Shed since its November opening. “Good men are
already talking,” Keith said.
Keith is a Vietnam Veteran and served for 25 years in the
Army and understands the need for men to have a place
where they can develop camaraderie and friendships.
“The Men’s Shed strongly supports good mental health
in men, preventing loneliness and creates a sense of
belonging,” Keith said.
Arncliffe Men’s Shed
Now Open
The Shed has been fitted out with a range of tools;
Keith hopes that men will be able to bring their own DIY
projects to the Shed. He also hopes the Shed can be
supported by major hardware stores which can provide
demonstrations and useful advice.
Schools are being approached to encourage the
involvement of the younger generation. “Students can
bring their school projects to the Shed and be given a
chance to learn new and useful skills,” Keith said.
Men’s Shed meets every Wednesday 10am-3pm.

Centre on 9503 9902.

Bexley Pool - Have Your SayBrighter
Future
for the
City
The City of Rockdale’s future looks brighter when it comes to building and development
in the City. The gazettal of the Rockdale Local Environmental Plan (LEP) 2011 and
Development Control Plan (DCP) means that these two documents now replace over
50 DCPs and Policies in our City.
The remainder of the City’s new planning framework also comes into force: The
Rockdale Development Control Plan (DCP) 2011; Rockdale Technical Specifications;
Wolli Creek and Bonar Street Precinct Public Domain Plan.
“This new set of controls provides a simple framework for developers, builders and
renovators to work by,” Mayor Bill Saravinovski said. “This new LEP is a foundation stone
on which we can continue to build a city of which we can be proud of.”
the path to bringing their ideas to reality. This proposal
for the Bexley Pool is now open for discussion. Let
us look at how we can bring a greater benefit to our
community and the surrounding area,” Mayor Bill
Saravinovski said.
The Bexley Pool upgrade will provide year round access
to swimming, leisure and fitness. The centre will also
provide 214 car spaces for visitors.
“A 21st Century 50m Olympic-size Pool, a 25m lap pool,
a state of the art gymnasium, spa, sauna, crèche and
other associated leisure facilities will guarantee that this
family-friendly centre will be one of National standing,”
Councillor Shane O’Brien said.
Energy efficiency principles will be incorporated into the
initial construction of the new centre. The design means
that there will be savings in power, pool heating, cooling
and lighting.
Written submissions can be sent to Rockdale City Council,
‘Bexley Swimming and Leisure Centre’, PO Box 21,
Rockdale NSW 2216, or faxed to (02) 9562 1777 or emailed
to bexpool@rockdale.nsw.gov.au
