Unpacking the Social Media Phenomenon: Towards a Research AgendaIan McCarthy
In this paper, we highlight some of the challenges and opportunities that social media presents to researchers, and offer relevant theoretical avenues to be explored. To do this, we present a model that unpacks social media by using a honeycomb of seven functional building blocks. We then examine each of the seven building blocks and, through appropriate social and socio-technical theories, raise questions that warrant further in-depth research to advance the conceptualization of social media in public affairs research. Finally, we combine the individual research questions for each building block back into the honeycomb model to illustrate how the theories in combination provide a powerful macro-lens for research on social media dynamics.

Understanding Gamification of Consumer ExperiencesIan McCarthy
Robson, K.E., Plangger, K.A., Kietzmann, J., McCarthy, I., and Pitt, L.F. (2014) Understanding Gamification of Consumer Experiences, Advances in Consumer Research, 42, 352-356
Recently, organizations have begun to tout ‘gamification’ as an effective method of increasing motivation and engagement of employees, customers, patients, and students, among other stakeholders (Wingfield 2012). Nonetheless, despite projections that such gamification will become a widely adopted phenomenon, estimates are gloomy with respect to the real impact these projects will have on the experiences of ‘players’ (i.e., participants who are supposed to have fun), and on the organizations that would like to use gamification to improve the players’ behavior in their favor (Burke 2011). Gamification is difficult, and fraught with problems that can lead to strategic and resource-based problems for the firm. In this article, we present an experience framework in order to show the effect of gamification on consumers’ experiences that is illustrated through four extended examples. We conclude this article with a few implications for future research into, as well as practical application for the successful gamification of consumer experiences. But first, we discuss what gamification is and what it is not.

Is it all a game? Understanding the principles of gamificationIan McCarthy
There is growing interest in how gamification–—defined as the application of game design principles in non-gaming contexts–—can be used in business. However, academic research and management practice have paid little attention to the challenges of how best to design, implement, manage, and optimize gamification strategies. To advance understanding of gamification, this article defines what it is and explains how it prompts managers to think about business practice in new and innovative ways. Drawing upon the game design literature, we present a framework of three gamification principles –— mechanics, dynamics, and emotions (MDE) –— to explain how gamified experiences can be created. We then provide an extended illustration of gamification and conclude with ideas for future research and application opportunities.
The open innovation research landscape: Established perspectives and emerging...Ian McCarthy
This paper provides an overview of the main perspectives and themes emerging in research on open innovation. The paper is the result of a collaborative process among several open innovation scholars—having a common basis in the recurrent Professional Development Workshop (PDW) on “Researching Open Innovation” at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management. In this paper, we present opportunities for future research on open innovation, organized at different levels of analysis. We discuss some of the contingencies at these different levels, and argue that future research needs to study open innovation — originally an organizational-level phenomenon — across multiple levels of analysis. While our integrative framework allows comparing, contrasting, and integrating different perspectives at different levels of analysis, further theorizing will be needed to advance open innovation research. On this basis, we propose some new research categories as well as questions for future research — particularly those that span across research domains that have so far developed in isolation.

The Newton High School FBLA chapter conducted a fundraiser selling Ozark Delight Lollipops to teach members and the community about the American enterprise system. Each member sold one bag of 60 lollipops and kept the profits. The goals were to promote understanding of enterprise locally, provide hands-on experience, and communicate with the community. Planning involved researching prices and sales. Members implemented the project by developing sales pitches incorporating enterprise principles. The project was successful - through determined selling, the chapter profited approximately $2,000 for charity and taught about business ownership, competition, buyers, and government regulation in daily life.
Every day brands create content with the hopes that it will "go viral". The prospect of a massive amount of earned media (i.e. free impressions) is provocative, but how realistic is it? In order to create content that people will share we must understand certain undeniable truths that are grounded in who we are as humans and how we interact with each other.
This presentation will uncover why, how, and when people share using psychological, neurological, and biological truths. I will then apply these truths to a simple set of principles that will help improve the likelihood that the content you are creating is more sharable. It might not go viral, but more people will see it.

This document summarizes a story about a young man named Monty Roberts who had a dream of owning a horse ranch. In high school, he wrote a paper detailing his goal of owning a 200-acre horse ranch. However, his teacher gave him an F and said it was unrealistic. Monty refused to change his paper. He went on to achieve his dream and own a 4,000 square foot house on a 200-acre horse ranch, inspiring others with his approach to life and horse training. The document warns that people's doubts can unintentionally steal our dreams, and we shouldn't let others' doubts discourage us from pursuing our goals.
