This document summarizes a scientific study of roadside memorials conducted by Dr. Art Jipson of the University of Dayton. The study involved interviewing over 300 individuals involved in erecting 127 memorials across several Midwest and East Coast states. It also analyzed newspaper articles and reviewed state laws regarding roadside memorials. Key findings include that most memorials are erected by female family members to commemorate a loved one killed in a car accident. Memorials vary in style but commonly include crosses, names, dates and personal items. State laws regarding memorials also vary significantly.
