5. Remember the Alamo? Texas was never considered truly independent according to Mexico. Americans differing views of slavery made the decision on Texas tougher. Texas finally becomes a state by 1845.
6. Mexican American War Lasted from 1846-1848. Sparked over the annexation of Texas. Differing views Whig party was against war (industrialization not expansion) Democrats were for the war (Manifest Destiny) Some thought this would lead to more slave power
7. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Mexico was forced to surrender because they were so outmatched militarily. Gave U.S. undisputed control of Texas as well as Nevada, Utah, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Mexico received 18,250,000 for the land. (Half of what was offered before the war)

It was an instance of a republic following the bad example of European monarchies, in not considering justice in their desire to acquire additional territory”
11. Compromise of 1850 Helped relieve sectional tensions for a brief time. New territories could be slave holding states based on popular sovereignty. Stronger fugitive slave act
