Canj, Sutomore and Bar
Bar region in Montenegro begins in the southeast of Budva Riviera, Petrovac and after the Gulf Buljarica.
Just from that place to the town of Ulcinj beaches occupy a small area just 7.3 km to 77 km over the
entire surface of this coastal area, which is largely responsible for the configuration of the terrain in
some places quite steeply down to the sea. Moving from Petrovac and Buljarica passenger passerby
encounters three arranged one after the other introduced in which tourist resorts are located Canj,
Sutomore and also Montenegro's main port city of Bar. All three tourist centers appear as a very popular
place for holiday tourists from Serbia and Bosnia and the attractiveness of these places has contributed
to the image of the most inexpensive destinations in terms of accommodation and meals.
Canj
Canj is a tourist settlement with several hotel category 2 * and 3 * as well as private accommodation
which is rent only in the summer during the tourist season. Prices are generally lower than on the Budva
Riviera, but the infrastructure of the village is proportionally less developed. Sandy beach length 830 m
is called the pearl coast and is known for its fine sand. Besides beaches, there are coffee bars,
restaurants and fast food facilities. On the southeast side of the Canj bay is Sutomore bay where there is
a tourist place Sutomore. The Queen's beach is situated in the vicinity of Canj, at its very north. This
small but attractive beach can be approached only from the sea. It is surrounded with sediment cliffs.
Because of its environment, fine sand and crystal clean sea water, it was the favorite beach of queen
Milena when coming to the Topolica castle.

Sutomore
At a distance of only 4 km from Canj and 5 km from the town of Bar, along with local road and railway
town of Sutomore is known for its wide sandy beaches. Sutomore is located on the banks of a small bay
in the surrounding vineyards, olive and grape, tangerine, orange and lemon.
Regardless of their size Sutomore provide for himself popularity of both domestic and foreign tourists
because of the economic and affordable accommodation and food prices due to the fact that he is only
30 minutes away from Podgorica, which contributes to the fact that many residents of the capital came
to the beach in the morning and evening return home either by bus, car or the local train which is
popularly known as “bathing train”. Unlike Canj, Sutomore is much larger settlement in which life takes
place throughout the year due primarily near the town of Bar, and that the issuers of private
accommodation in Sutomore live as opposed to Canj where people come only during the summer in
their vacation homes and receive visitors in the rooms and apartments. In addition to private
accommodation in Sutomore there are several hotels with 2*, 3 * and 4*. The infrastructure is
developed on the coast alongside the beach; there are numerous cafes, restaurants, facilities with fast
food, shops, and discos. On the beach provides a large number of water activities.
Amongst its numerous monuments of the past, the tourist attractions most likely to capture your
attention are the Church of St. Tekla with its Orthodox and Catholic altar, the ruins of the Benedictine
monastery in the pine trees area of Ratac and Haj Nehaj fortress.

Bar
A modern city with wide boulevards, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, Bar represents the
biggest tourist and nautical centre at the entrance to the Adriatic Sea. It is the ending railroad station on
the railroad Belgrade-Bar and is the seat of the Bar Riviera and the Bar municipality. It is divided into
Stari Bar (Old Bar), Bar and the port.
Old Bar is situated in the hinterland of the Bar plain some 5 km from the sea. It consists of an enclosed
town of around 600 buildings of public, religious and military character. The majority of the buildings
date back to the Middle Age and Renaissance period. Other buildings belong to the period of Turkish
occupation. All the buildings are located inside the city walls and most of them are ruined. Residential
architecture has late Gothic, Renaissance, and oriental elements. The architecture is characterized by a
powerful fortified system built in the late 15th century and during the 16th century, consisting of towers
and linked defensive walls. There are the remains of 17 churches out of which some are conserved and
restored. In the immediate vicinity of the town there are many medieval churches, bridges, and oil and
flour mills and an aqueduct from the late 16th and early 17th century. The fortress is now an open-air
museum.
This is the region of the great olive-growers and olive oil producers. They can boast about having the
oldest olive tree that sprouted two millenniums ago! This olive tree, with the developing port, is the
dominant symbols of the town. The medallion of the International Television Festival, which is held
every year in this peaceful town, has the shape of this ancient olive tree. According to legend, no
resident of Bar could get married unless they planted at least ten trees of this noble Mediterranean
plant.
