This document provides a section-wise risk/hazard assessment for health and safety at Sree Santhosh Garments. It identifies risks and hazards in 14 departments including fabric storage, cutting, stitching, packing, maintenance, electrical, office, ergonomics and the lift. For each risk, it evaluates the severity, probability and significance of impacts. It also lists preventive measures to address each risk such as emergency response plans, training, personal protective equipment and equipment safety features.

19 Migrant workers
They may not be able to easily
understand English, and many
migrant workers do not wish to
admit to their limitations in
English for fear of losing their
job or not being employed in
the first place
Where safety
instruction and
emergency signs are
in English and the
migrant does not read
English, the risk of
hazard and injury
3 1 3 1
Employers need to check language skills on
recruitment and, where necessary, use translators.
Health and safety training and
instruction in English may not
be effective whether such
communication is verbal or
written.
risk of hazard and
injury obviously
increases 3 1 3 1
Employers need to check language skills on
recruitment and, where necessary, use translators.
Safety signs to be posted in a language that workers
understand
Gender issues can make
certain migrant workers more
vulnerable. Women are
unlikely to have their gender
taken into account for risk
assessment purposes when
work is allocated.
This may affect the
work and may lead to
accidents or workers
falling ill 3 1 3 1
Gender has to be considered while risk assessment
and allocating work to migrant men and women
workers
Women migrant workers are
often reluctant to admit that
they have become pregnant
for fear of losing wages due to
being forced to stop work
early.
Women workers are
pregnant may be
asked to do hard jobs
and excess overtime
resulting in fatigue and
abortion.
3 1 3 1
Employers should encourage women workers to be
open to admit if they are pregnant and then allot menial
work to them and give them overtime if they wish to
earn a decent living.
