Ariminum was founded in 268 BC by Roman farmer-soldiers who crossed the Apennines and established their colony along the river Ariminus. The original layout of the city consisted of the cardo maximus and decumanus maximus intersecting in the central forum. In the Imperial Age, Augustus reorganized the city's streets and endowed it with important monuments, including the Augustus Arch, Tiberius Bridge over the Marecchia River, aqueducts, and a drainage system. Hadrian likely built the amphitheater in the 2nd century.
