Resume is Your Brochure Attractive Clean, easy-to-read Concise:  Boil it down to the essence of YOU! Action verbs  Achievement Oriented, not just tasks Show scope and breadth
What Schools Want Clean, crisp, well-written, easy to read Accuracy and professional appearance Writing that demonstrates enthusiasm  and passion for the position Highly Qualified! Want to see experience in teaching, working with children/youth Someone who will contribute to their community
Be Unique! Avoid the cookie-cutter resume You are a teacher. Be  while staying within guidelines! creative
Teaching Resume Should Contain Contact Information:  DO include email address Statement of Objective Education:  include GPA  Highly Qualified Training:  include field experience, units taught
Teaching Resume Should Contain Work Experience: Most current first Action Words & be Accomplishment Oriented Computer Skills Quantitative Information High School Activities:  sponsorship of programs
FORMAT Paper: 8 ½ x 11 white/cream, good bond  1 Page when possible No pictures/personal info Font Type:  try Tahoma, Arial or other clean font Font Size:  11 – 14 pt BE CONSISTENT!
FORMAT White Space:  used wisely Margins: lined up Bullets: for lists (2 or more) Don’t fold, staple or paperclip when mailing If scanning possible avoid lines and underlining
Prioritize! Headers Bullets References Always place the most relevant information closest to the top!
Employers Biggest Pet Peeves Spelling and Grammar Errors Too vague and generic Boastful Not enough information

Cover Letter Should Be… Specific & Personal Written in proper business form on same paper as resume  One page Edited carefully for spelling, grammar and punctuation School & Job-Centered Tell what you can contribute
Cover Letter Should Be… Tailored for specific job - research Express an interest in learning more about school & job Addressed to specific individual with correct title and address Single spaced, double between paragraphs, same font as resume
Cover Letter Should  Not  Be… A Generic Form Letter Over-confident or braggy Cute or Humorous  Self-Centered Tell what  YOU  want  A rehash of your resume
Paragraph #1 Brief:  Two to three sentences State position for which you are applying, where you saw the posting Any personal contacts you have in or with the school or school system Your general qualifications for the job
Paragraph #2 Body of the letter State why you are the person for the job:  Sell yourself Expand upon qualifications:  pick out your most relevant qualifications Demonstrate how your background and experience qualify you for the job
Paragraph #3 Conclusion/Closing Keep it simple  State where and when you can be reached Express willingness to come to an interview or supply further information Thank the reader for his/her time and consideration
