Career Highlight
Ilco-Unican March 1991 - January1992 (10 months) • Rocky Mount,NorthCarolina
KilnTender
Maintainedafurnace or kilnusedforprocessingbrass,whereas,the manufacturingprocessusedto
produce brassinvolved combiningthe appropriateraw materialsintoamoltenmetal,whichwas
allowedtosolidify. The shape andpropertiesof the solidified metalwere thenalteredthroughaseries
of carefullycontrolledoperationstoproduce the desiredbrassstock, made available inavarietyof
formsincludingplate,sheet,strip,foil,rod,bar,wire,andbilletdependingonthe final application.
2. The typical manufacturing processusedtoproduce brasssheetandstripwas melting. The appropriate
amountof suitable copperalloyscrapwas weighedandtransferredinto anelectricfurnace whereitwas
meltedatabout1,920°F (1,050°C). Afteradjustingforthe amountof zinc inthe scrap alloy, an
appropriate amountof zincwas addedafterthe coppermelted. A small amountof additional zinc,
about50% of the total zinc required, may have beenaddedtocompensateforanyzincthat vaporized
duringthe meltingoperation. If anyothermaterialswere requiredforthe particularbrassformulation,
theywere alsoaddedif theywere notpresentinthe copperscrap. The moltenmetal was thenpoured
intomoldsandallowedtosolidifyintoslabscalledcakes. Insome operations,the meltingandpouring
were done semi-continuouslytoproduce verylongslabs. Whenthe cakeswere cool enoughtobe
moved, theywere dumpedoutof the moldsandmovedto the rollingareawhere theywere stored.
In the hot rollingprocessthe cakeswere placedinafurnace andreheateduntil theyreachedthe desired
temperature. The temperaturedepended onthe final shape andpropertiesof the brassstock. The
heatedcakeswere thenfedthroughaseriesof opposingsteel rollerswhichreducedthe thickness of the
brass step-by-steptoabout0.5 in(13 mm) or less. At the same time, the widthof the brassincreased,
withthisprocess sometimes beingcalledbreakdownrolling. The brass, whichwasnow much cooler,
passedthrougha millingmachine;thisprocesswascalledcoldrolling,becausethe temperature of the
brass was much lowerthanthe temperature duringhotrolling. Coldrollingdeformed the internal
structure of the brass,or grain, and increased itsstrengthandhardness. The more the thicknesswas
reduced, the strongerandharderthe material became. The cold-rollingmillsweredesignedtominimize
deflectionacrossthe widthof the rollersinorderto produce brasssheetswithnear-uniformthickness.
The stepswere repeatedmanytimestoachieve the desiredthickness, strength, anddegree of hardness,
at thispoint, the wide sheetswere slitintonarrowersectionstoproduce brassstrip, andthe stripthen
was givenanacidbath and rinse tocleanit. The finishrolling waswhere the sheetswere givenafinal
coldrollingtotightenthe tolerancesonthe thicknessortoproduce a verysmoothsurface finish. They
were thencut to size,stackedorcoileddependingontheirthicknessandintendeduse,andsenttothe
ware-house fordistribution.
