RESPECT FOR ELDERS
Ever since my childhood, I was taught to respect my elders because as my
grandmother believed, great blessings only belonged to those that showed respect
towards their elders.
Being young and reckless at the age of seven, I never really understood the
importance of this core value. She was seventy five years old and always stayed
worshipping God every single day therefore it was hard not to listen to what she had
taught and the fact that I was a Christian too meant that doing what she had asked
was the only right thing to do so I took her lesson about respect for elders really
serious.
She taught how to greet the elders warmly with welcome and a smile, the use
of profanity or abusive language towards elders was not acceptable, obeying all
instructions as given by the elders was the number one priority that I had to follow,
the house work at home was not to be done by elders but only the children in the
home and therefore all these lessons were to teach me how to respect my elders.
Honestly, all this seemed a little too much I mean greeting all the time, always
doing the house work at home and also not being able to question your elders or use
any abusive language towards them, it all seemed much but all these lessons helped
me to become a better person and as I grew up these characters that showed
respect became part of me which helped me grow many professional relationships
with many different people like my friends, teachers and also my bosses in the
different jobs I acquired.
When I was eighteen years old, I finally got my first job at a café where cakes,
tea and coffee were sold to customers. Frankly speaking, it is hard to find and keep a
job at a cafe without being able to have good customer qualities and these qualities
most importantly require one to have respect. There had to be respect between the
coworkers and most importantly towards the customers. Therefore all the lessons
that my grandmother had taught me helped in my daily work at this job.
Many students in school might not realize that having respect towards the
teachers, professors and also their fellow students is a good quality for them to have
in school. In most, cases the students who respect their teachers are able to listen
more and follow instructions as given in class which enables them to have better
grades in school.
Therefore I believe that everything that I was taught by my grandmother was
based on to the most important lesson and that is to always have respect for my
elders because like she always said great blessing only belong to those that have
respect towards their elders.
